It’s been a minute.

The last time we checked the rankings was in June, when the NHL was still in limbo. Since then, we’ve had a long run of playoffs, a draft, a long leave of absence and the start of a very different NHL season.

Since then, we have adjusted the standard rating to better reflect the position value and the different skill sets to better measure the current values players have developed. Previous versions of the rankings have taken turns, but it’s time for the rankings to better reflect the way fantasy managers play the game.

ESPN.com’s off-season and top 300 rankings are not mine, but I will use them to show the raw data for these top rankings. You’ll see a lot of changes in the top 300 – because it’s not my personal ranking, but also because a lot has changed since November, when the NHL announced its return.

Not much has changed since June, but I digress.

These rankings are forward-looking. They should represent our hopes for what is yet to be done, not list what has already been done. But of course the future is based on the past. While Semyon Varlamov’s early shutouts may not be important in the standings, they do shed some light on the Islanders’ future keeper tandem.

The idea behind the article with each ranking is to highlight some of the major differences and provide an explanation. I will also make a list of all new entries in the rankings, all players who have progressed in the rankings, and a list of those who have not been included.

Forward, moving

Brayden Point, F, Tampa Bay Lightning (increase from 27 to 38 seats) : A missed season for Nikita Kucherov will shorten Lightning’s bench in favor of the Point. With Stephen Stamkos and Ondrej Palat on each shift, Point has the opportunity to get closer to 2018-19 production (2.46 fantasy points per game).

2 Connected

Thomas Hertl Sharks, F, San Jose Sharks (increase from 51 to 87 seats) : He has a good place in the standings – running with Evander Kane at even strength and with Kane and Logan Couture on the best power play. Hertl has averaged 2.03 fantasy points per game (FPPG) over the past two seasons and will begin racing this season.

Mike Hoffman, F, St. Louis Blues (maximum 43 seats to 115) : Maybe Hoffman can play a better role in time. He currently ranks 12th on his team in ice time per game and played his first game with only the best player on power play before starting the game. We want to see him work with Brayden Schenn and Ryan O’Reilly, which is not yet the case.

Sam Reinhart, F, Buffalo Sabres (+31 pitches at 125) : Reinhart has been catapulted to the top of the standings to play alongside Taylor Hall and Jack Eichel, and could find himself in a crazy race. His choice here is a bit surprising: Victor Olofsson was given a role by the experts this season, while Tage Thompson played in the first two games of the season. But Reinhart was Eichel’s trusted partner in the NHL, so the choice makes sense. Reinhart scored two goals for his superstar team on Monday.

CamCam Atkinson, F, Columbus Blue Jackets (increase from 109 to 145 seats) : The start of the season is not good, Michael Del Zotto is the top scorer for the Blue Jackets. It won’t be long now. Atkinson, trying to bounce back from a difficult 2019-20 season, has been seen with Boone Jenner and Max Domi and the team’s best power play to date. Remember, Atkinson scored a whopping 2.05 FPPG in the 2018-19 season.

Anthony Cirelli, F, Tampa Bay Lightning (117 spots to 230) : Injured or not, Koucherov’s ranking in the offseason was too high. With neither Kucherov, nor Stephen Stamkos, nor Braden Point on the line, expectations for the fantasy production can be lowered.

Protection in progress

Morgan Rielly, D, Toronto Maple Leafs (reduction from 68 to 62 seats) : It’s true that I have to quantify the value of defenders differently than the creators of our off-season Top 300, because Rielly is just one of the many examples of D-men I’ve listed here. Tyson Barry is different. Like Shea Weber and Matt Dumba. While Rielly’s hitting and blocking (ESPN.com’s new standard categories) aren’t his forte, he’s still capable of an incredible 2.46 FPPG in 2018-19 using the same scoring system. I think he could go back this season.

Mark Giordano, D, Calgary Flames (maximum 58 seats to 99) : Giordano wasn’t fully slowed on the power play, but he’s definitely in the second unit and behind Rasmus Andersson in terms of time on the power play. Much of its importance lies in the role it plays in the power game, so much of that would be missing if this movement were permanent.

Alexander Edler, D, Vancouver Canucks (maximum 61 seats to 122) : I’ve heard that Mr. Edler has been instrumental in ESPN.com’s new rating system. But I don’t think he has the same role as the past few seasons. Until two seasons ago, Edler wore this tape on his back with a blue line. But with the support of Tyler Myers, Quinn Hughes, Nate Schmidt and even Travis Hamonic playing great minutes, I don’t think we’ll see the same Edler who has averaged 2.67 FPPG over the last two seasons (for comparison, that’s almost as much as Kucherov).

Neil Pionk, D, Winnipeg Jets (52 seats out of 132) : In a move we expected last season (but never materialized, allowing Pionk to storm the stage), Josh Morrissey has been the Jets’ quarterback so far. Pionk will be here soon, but Morrissey is a must.

Goalkeeper in motion

Sap Saros, L, Nashville Predators (maximum 22 seats to 71) : I’m still expecting some sort of formal ceremony where Pekka Rinne literally hands Saros a burning stamp, then bows and slowly sinks into the mist. But I think Saros played a few minutes last season and then started all the playoffs, which was a torch passing game in itself. And this season has started no differently: Saros made two good starts and Rinne played a pretty mediocre one.

Semyon Varlamov, L, New York Islanders (127 additional seats, or 84) : Isn’t that a little reckless? Maybe it’s too thoughtful. What many, including myself, feared was a time-share with rookie Ilya Sorokin, who Varlamov has had in commercials so far. The two opening games of the season are very similar to Sorokine’s first five goals. But I don’t think that’s enough, because that makes him the 14th ranked goalie – and if it seemed like an island goalie was getting more than 50% of his starts, I don’t think anyone could dispute that ranking.
