More than 35 million travelers visit Thailand each year, making it one of the most visited countries in the world. Bangkok’s street food scene, the stunning islands in the south, and the thousands of temples throughout the country are all iconic attractions.

Since living in Thailand for the past five years, Josh Shephard has explored the country from the remote mountains in the north to the tropical islands in the south. Throughout this post, we will explore 14 things that make Thailand a popular destination for travelers all over the world 밤문화.

What is Thailand famous for?

There are over 41,000 temples in Thailand, and more are being built every day. Several temples can be explored on foot in one day in many regions. The White Temple in Chiang Rai, Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok, Wat Ratburana in Ayutthaya, and Wat Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai are some of Thailand’s most iconic temples.

When visiting temples in Thailand, be sure to cover your knees and shoulders with clothing and remove your shoes at the entrance. Keep your voice down and avoid pointing your feet at the Buddha statues in a respectful manner.

Oh, and in case you didn’t know, Wat means Temple in Thai!

Monks

The country has over 41,000 Buddhist temples, so there are plenty of monks. Thailand is home to more than 300,000 monks!

Typically, monks wear bright orange robes and carry alms bowls to collect food donations. A monk begging for money on the street is typically a scammer. Be cautious when approaching them.

Thailand is a highly respected country when it comes to monks. There are signs on the trains requesting that you offer monks priority seating, and there are even express lines at immigration checkpoints and most ticketing locations. It is not allowed for women to touch monks, not even as a greeting gesture like shaking hands.

Buddhism

Thailand is a heavily Buddhist country as evidenced by its 41,000 temples and 300,000 monks. A small Muslim minority lives along the Malaysian border in the south, where 94% of Thailand’s population is Buddhist.

Thais take Buddhism seriously in many aspects of their daily lives. As you leave Suvarnabhumi airport, you will see lots of large signs asking you to respect Buddha and not use it as a decoration. Don’t get Buddha’s head tattooed on your arm because it looks cool, and don’t buy Buddha statues for your garden just because they look nice.

Street Food

As street food is a very broad category, listing every iconic dish would take forever. Thailand is home to some of the most iconic dishes in the world, including Pad Thai, Green Curry, and Tom Yum Goong.

Many travelers are unaware of the fact that Thailand has different cuisines in each region. There are many curries in the north, spiced meat dishes in the east, and the spiciest food in the south. The most diverse street food scene in the world can be found in Bangkok, a true melting pot of cultures.

Islands

Around the coast of Thailand, there are almost 1000 islands! Thailand’s west coast is home to some of the most beautiful islands in the Andaman Sea. You can snorkel at stunning coral reefs on islands like Koh Lipe and Koh Lanta, which have incredibly clear water.

There are also beautiful islands near Cambodia in the far east, while most people head to the west coast. There are a number of stunning remote beaches on islands like Koh Kood and Koh Chang where you can escape the crowds completely. Thailand’s islands offer endless opportunities for exploration.
