Preview of Gonzaga vs. Texas Tech

Gonzaga has struggled to find its stride after a six-game winning streak to begin the season, finishing 2-2 in their past four games. The Bulldogs were able to pull off a major victory in their most recent matchup, defeating Merrimack 80-55. Drew Timme led the team with 22 points, with 15 apiece from Chet Holmgren and Julian Stawther.

After halftime, Gonzaga restricted the Warriors to just 25% shooting and 24 points.

Coach Mark Few stated, “I felt our defense was much better in the second half.”

Gonzaga, on the other hand, shot only 22 percent from outside the arc in their win, which Few attributed to Merrimack’s solid zone defense.

“I’m not sure how much from 3 we’re suffering,” Few remarked. “Julian (Strawther) has done a good job and is shooting at a good clip. Rasir (Bolton) has a fantastic shooting %. Chet (Holmgren) has been stepping up recently, and he’s declined a lot of 3s. In terms of the shooting, it has harmed us.

“The second issue is, when you look at Merrimack’s stats, you’ll see that people don’t shoot a high percentage against that zone.” They take off, pursue you off the line, and are challenged. So I think we did a good job of figuring out how to score against them.”

Gonzaga is fired up to face Texas Tech, a club who knocked them out of the Elite Eight last season. Gonzaga is 0-3 all-time versus the Red Raiders.

“You know, there may be a smidgeon added.” When asked whether this game meant a bit more to him, senior guard Rasir Bolton said, “At the end of the day, I want to win every basketball game.” “They’re tough, they’re disciplined, and they stick to their game plan until the end.” They are very disciplined and stick to their defensive game plan. That, I believe, is the greatest option.”

“Anytime we face someone he’s played before, he wants to defeat them very badly,” Strawther noted. “All he’s saying is that they’re going to attempt to screw up the game on defense and force as many turnovers as they can.” We can’t give in because that’s the game they want to play.”

This season, Texas Tech is 8-1, with their lone defeat coming against Providence on December 1. For the Red Raiders, Kevin McCullar leads the club with 14.3 points and 6.3 rebounds.

The total has been set at 145.5 points, with Gonzaga as an 8.5-point favorite.
