In parallel to the return of the classic TV and comic book crossover event, The CW also has a lot of exciting news on the horizon. The network president has teased some crossover type episodes during the fall.
When the CW launched in 2006, it was the network with the most original programming on the air. Now, it’s become known as the network where any old movie can be remade into a television series, because the network is so committed to the idea of original programming. That’s probably why it’s being called the network of crossovers. The CW has announced that its upcoming fall event will include not one, not two, but three crossover episodes between the shows Supergirl and Arrow.
The CW is looking to make a splash in the genre of superhero TV shows and movies by partnering with HBO to produce a series of short films that will tie in with the network’s DC Comics-based series. Jeffrey Peters, president of programming at the CW, told TVLine.com on Monday that the network is “working with HBO to create a series of short-form digital content that will feature characters from existing CW series as well as the upcoming feature film DC’s “Gotham,” which is due in theaters on July 19.”
Last year, much of the television world was in uncharted territory, and the COVID-19 pandemic added a number of extra precautions and procedures to the task of filming a television episode. As a result, many TV shows have been postponed or even cancelled due to the pandemic – including The CW’s Arrowverse crossover series, which traditionally combines all current series in the DC Comics universe into one multi-series event. Now that many aspects of television production seem to be back on track, some have wondered if we might be getting a new Arrowverse crossover in the upcoming 2021-2022 season – and now it looks like we have our answer. During a press briefing on Tuesday, The CW president Mark Pedowitz confirmed that five episodes of The Flash airing this fall will feature characters from Arrow. Although Pedowitz said no specific guests or characters – from an existing or future series – have been confirmed yet, he said the episodes will be crossover in nature.
These are the other characters from The CWverse that will appear in each episode, Pedowitz explained. It won’t really be a crossover, but it will look like one.
This will be the final crossover-style event in the franchise after the massive Crisis on Infinite Earths event that ran for five nights in late 2019 and early 2020. Since then, the topography of DC Comics-inspired series on the network has changed dramatically, with a brand new main character in Batwoman, the debuts of Superman and Lois, and the final seasons of Supergirl and Black Lightning. During last year’s Upfronts presentation, it was hinted that the 2020-2021 crossover would feature Batwoman and Superman and Lois, but that idea was dropped a few months later.
I would say I have ideas for ideas, and I’ve had [The CW CEO] Mark Pedowitz and [executive producer] Greg Berlanti pretty much suggest what I would like if I were on my own, former Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow producer Mark Guggenheim stated in early 2020. There’s a section that’s already been developed….. Mark and Greg approved it, and things are getting more specific. I texted Mark the other day and told him we needed to get in a room to talk about it. Usually we do an autopsy to see what went right, what went wrong, what we learned…. We’re always learning something.
Look, I hate comparisons to [Avengers:] Endgame because it’s just not fair – we’re working with a budget to feed Endgame – but Marvel hasn’t continued Endgame as a second, Guggenheim continued. I think you should be prepared for an event like this. What we all agree on – players, crew chiefs, everyone – is that we’re not going to do a project of this magnitude again next year. Actually, Mark [Pedowitz] and I have been talking about getting back to our crossover roots, and I’ll leave it to people to interpret what that means.
The CW is bringing a number of new and renewed DC Comics series to television this year: season 8 of The Flash, season 7 of Legends of Tomorrow, season 3 of Batwoman, season 3 of Stargirl, season 2 of Superman and Lois and season 1 of Naomi.
