Simple, hassle-free and very practical. Hill House’s trademark Rossignol dress is just one of the latest iterations of homemade dresses. And while homemade dresses have been around for decades, if not centuries (the style is said to originate from Victorian dresses), romantic dresses are currently experiencing a renaissance.
Nightingale dresses are loose, flowing and feminine, says lifestyle expert and stylist Amanda Sanders, who mentions celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Rock and Jennifer Coolidge. Often the only fitted part of the dress is the bust, and other key features include heavy, smoky, exaggerated puff sleeves and a typically long, slightly pleated skirt. Although fleece robes are comfortable enough to sleep in, their usefulness goes far beyond a nightshirt. The genius of fleece dresses and similar dresses for the home is that they are usually chic enough to wear to the office, comfortable enough to run errands in, and romantic enough for a night out on the weekend.
Sanders notes that you’ll probably see fleece dresses even more often as we move into warmer weather and out of pandemic isolation with the idea that we don’t have to sacrifice comfort to look good.
