The Buffalo Bills may be without their All-Pro wide receiver for at least a few more weeks.

Stefon Diggs has been forced to sit out the last week of practice with a lingering knee issue, one that kept him sidelined for the team’s preseason opener on Friday against the Detriot Lions. Bills head coach Sean McDermott said that the ailment could likely keep Diggs out for at least a little while longer, but had some good news about the prognosis.

Diggs Is Still Sick

According to Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic, McDermott said that Diggs will miss practice on Sunday, but that the knee injury would not impact the team’s preparations for the regular season.

Buscaglia tweeted, “McDermott indicated there isn’t any worry, at this time, that Diggs’ knee issue will persist into the regular season.”

Diggs had skipped practice all week and was out for the team’s 16-15 victory against the Lions on Friday, though it’s unclear if he would have played even if fit. Many starters, including quarterback Josh Allen, were held out by McDermott.

As they did last season, the Bills will most certainly depend heavily on Diggs in 2021. The 27-year-old enjoyed a career-best season, leading the league in catches (127) and yards (1,535) while also scoring eight touchdowns and earning All-Pro accolades.

Offense of the Bills Dealing With Other Injuries

With Diggs still recovering from his knee injury, the Bills added another wide receiver to their roster this week in veteran wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who returned from an ankle ailment. Sanders was one of the most important offensive acquisitions this offseason, telling BuffaloBills.com that he was thrilled to be a part of such a talented and determined squad.

Sanders remarked, “You have a bunch of people that are enthusiastic about what they do.” “You would assume everyone is enthusiastic about it, but that’s not the case. Some men are naturally gifted in this area. Being passionate and being excellent are not the same thing. I believe we have a lot of men in this group that are enthusiastic about what they’re doing. They want to be successful, and they’re having a good time doing it.”

While Sanders is back and Diggs looks to be on his way back, the Bills still have other issues to contend with. Tight end Tommy Sweeney missed practice and was in a walking boot following Friday’s game, according to Buscaglia. The 26-year-old tight end missed the whole 2020 season due to a battle with COVID-19 that left him with myocarditis, a cardiac ailment that is one of the infection’s side effects, but he is expected to return this season.

“The heart is clearly a very important organ for us humans.”

Tommy Sweeney thinks he’s recovered from his myocarditis scare last season, but admits the news was terrifying.

In the team’s last two preseason games, it was unclear if Diggs or any of the other starters would get any play. The team’s younger players will be evaluated throughout the team’s short preseason schedule, according to McDermott.

In a news conference earlier this week, McDermott remarked, “We felt like it was essential to take a close look at these young guys in especially to give them their due.” “And this is the first time, with the cuts each week, essentially after each game, we want to make sure we have a solid grasp on who we have and what we need to do moving forward.”
