Roberto Firmino’s last-minute header broke the stubborn resistance of Tottenham in Anfield and sent Liverpool to the top of the Premier League standings.
A spectacular comeback seemed to have decided the game from the start – in downtime Firmino rose to head Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris past Andrew Robertson’s corner.
Liverpool took over Spurs in the early stages and followed when Mohamed Salah’s shot was led by Eric Dier over Lloris.
Barely out of their own half, Spurs scored a goal seven minutes later when Son Heung-min slipped past Alisson to finish in style.
Spurs had more chances in the second half when Steven Bergwein fired first and then hit the post, missing Harry Kane.
Coach Jose Mourinho regretted the missed opportunities, while the late winner of Liverpool by Firmino allowed the defending champions to take the lead three points clear.
