I was in House’s room when he was attacked a week ago. It was a moment that required leadership. I had hoped that the president would quickly try to defuse the situation, expose the situation, try to stop the violence, and he left his post, Major Wolf Blitzer, a freshman from Michigan, told CNN.

For me, it was a disqualification. It broke my heart to see people looting the Capitol. And the president has not taken responsibility since. I take the seat that Gerald Ford held for 25 years before moving to the White House. He pardoned Richard Nixon, but it was after Richard Nixon resigned and was held accountable for his actions. And there has to be a responsibility.

The House of Representatives voted 232 to 197 to impeach Trump, exactly a week after rebels forced lawmakers to flee the chamber where they voted for the fourth time in U.S. history – and the first time after a president was impeached twice. A total of ten GOP lawmakers, including House Republican No. 3 Liz Cheney of Wyoming, joined all Democrats in accusing Trump of inciting a riot.

Meijer – who replaced Justin Amash, the former Republican-leaning congressman who supported Trump’s first impeachment – showed his support for the impeachment earlier this week, telling CNN’s Erin Burnett on the street that Trump is no longer fit for office.

When asked whether he has already made a final decision on the charges, Mr Meijer replied that he wanted to wait before submitting additional evidence, but that we are also seriously considering this.

However, he concluded that Mr. Trump had betrayed his oath by trying to undermine our constitutional process, according to a statement released by Mr. Meijer’s office last Wednesday.

This vote is not a victory. It’s not a victory for my party, and the Democrats may not think it’s a victory. I’m not sure this is a victory for our country, the statement said. But for us, it is a call to action to reflect on these events and look for ways to correct them.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell does not plan to reopen the House until January 19, meaning it will not begin until Trump leaves office and President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in.

In a statement after the vote, McConnell said the Senate process cannot be completed before Biden’s inauguration, even if it begins earlier, and he hoped Congress and the executive branch will spend the next week working on ways to allow for a safe inauguration and an orderly transfer of power.

I believe Senator McConnell will do what he thinks is best for the country, Meijer said Wednesday night. He has shown that he cares about the institution, that he cares about the nation, and I am sure that the timetable that he is proposing will be appropriate.

CNN’s Jeremy Herb, Manu Raju, Lauren Fox and Phil Mattingly contributed to this report.
