While other industries are slowly recovering from the Great Recession, the technology sector is going beyond boom. New York City has created the most jobs in technology and other industries related to technology in the past year than any other city in the country. In fact, tech jobs have grown 10.1% in the city over the past year, with more than one thousand jobs added in just the last month.

Like hundreds of thousands of other New Yorkers, Adonis Goris lost his job last year when the Covid 19 pandemic hit the city. Mr. Goris, 25, now considers himself lucky. The former administrative assistant has not only found a new job, but has also started a new career in information technology.

According to a new study by the Center for Urban Futures, jobs like Goris’ were among the fastest growing in the city, although hiring slowed in most sectors during the pandemic.

The non-partisan think tank analyzed tens of thousands of job postings from April to November 2020, collected by labor market analysis firm Burning Glass Technologies. The analysis found that hiring for technology positions outpaced all other occupations, even those in healthcare in New York City, one of the hardest hit by Covid-19 in the U.S.

Covid-19 hit the NYC economy hard, but the tech sector continues to grow.

The most in-demand jobs in New York during this period were for software developers and engineers, with 21,268 openings, nearly double the number of doctors. The top 50 most in-demand jobs include 11 positions ranging from IT project managers to cyber security analysts to user experience designers.

According to Eli Dworkin, editorial and policy director of the Center for Urban Futures, there were plenty of jobs in the technology sector in New York City before the pandemic. It’s surprising how great the demand for jobs in technology remains, especially in this economic downturn, Dworkin said.

New York City lost about 600,000 jobs during the pandemic, according to the study. Technology recruitment has not been neglected either: According to the study, there were 37% fewer technology job openings between April and November of last year than during the same period the year before.

But over the past year, the need for technology platforms that allow people to work, shop, learn and keep in touch with friends and family from home has grown tremendously, allowing many tech companies to thrive during the pandemic, says Julie Samuels, executive director of Tech: NYC, a nonprofit advocacy group for the city’s technology sector.

increase their presence in the city and bring thousands of jobs with them.

Google and other major technology companies have expanded in New York in recent years.

In 2018, there were 161,000 tech jobs in the city, a number that includes a variety of industries but specific tech occupations, according to a 2019 study by Civic Hall, a nonprofit tech training center. According to the study, the number of technology jobs has increased by 45% since 2008.

New York startups also attract billions of dollars in funding, Samuels said. Tassos Argyros, CEO of New York startup ActionIQ, a customer data platform recently funded for $100 million, said his company is actively hiring in the city and plans to more than double its staff of 100. ActionIQ also plans to open a new office in Manhattan after Labor Day.

But the job openings analyzed by the Center for the Urban Future were not just for traditional technology companies, but for all sectors.

Economics of New York City

The growth of New York’s technology sector is accelerating rapidly, partly because technology companies are opening offices here, but also because many New York employers are becoming technology companies themselves, Samuels said. We have real estate and technology, finance and technology, fashion and technology, media and technology, and many other things.

Dworkin said the promise of tech job growth in New York is also a call to action for the city.

The city and the next mayor must respond to this demand, which will not go away, and ensure that more New Yorkers continue to benefit from it, he said. According to the report, 55% of all available jobs, both in and out of technology, require strong digital skills.

According to Dworkin, many New Yorkers, especially those with low incomes, do not have access to learning these skills and are underrepresented in the city’s technology sector. Black and Hispanic New Yorkers make up 45 percent of the city’s workforce, but only 19.6 percent of those in technology jobs, Dworkin said.

New York City officials said they are working on several initiatives to close the digital skills gap. City agencies such as the Economic Development Corporation and the Department of Small Business Services have partnered with the FullStack Academy, a technology school, to offer scholarships to those financially affected by the pandemic, as well as scholarships to increase the diversity of web developers in the city.

Goris found his new job – at Maximus, a technology company that provides government services – after taking a free crash course at Per Scholas, a nonprofit school that provides technology training in fields such as computer science, cybersecurity and software development, and also offers job search assistance. He started the program in October, completed it in January and started a new job at the end of the month. The vacancy was posted through a recruitment agency that regularly works with Per Scholas and Maximus to employ graduates such as Mr Goris, initially on a temporary basis with the possibility of permanent employment after a few months.

Plinio Ayala, president and CEO of Per Scholas, said the organization has partnered with several companies, including Google and


PLC to align training programs with business needs and create a pipeline to recruit a diverse workforce that is underrepresented in the technology sector, particularly black and Latino workers.

For Goris, who did not attend university, studying with Per Scholas and entering the IT sector was a dream come true, he says.

It’s just incredible that today, in the context of a pandemic, I chose a career path that is more in line with my passion, he said.
