Many people associate pools with high-stress family vacation spots, where the sun is always shining and the water is always warm. But for those who live in the tropics, a pool is the perfect way to cool off during the day and keep the bugs at bay at night. There are even some tropical areas that boast some of the coolest outdoor pools on the planet.
So, you’re looking to build an above ground pool in the near future. You’re probably thinking that the best way to go about it is to buy a kit, but you might also be interested in buying a project-built above ground pool, which you can do yourself. That’s exactly what this blog is for.

CNN . Anyone who loves to soak up the sun, swim a few laps or simply cool off when the summer sun is in full swing has probably dreamed of installing an inground pool in their garden. But the cost, maintenance and availability of space are unlikely to make this dream come true. So why not invest in the best: an above ground pool. Underground pools aren’t as complicated as their underground counterparts, but you still need to think twice about whether they’re right for your home, says Dan DiClerico, a housing expert at HomeAdvisor, a website that connects local professionals with housing projects. To assess whether your home is ready for a splash zone instead of an inflatable kiddie pool, we turned to DiClerico to find the best options from top brands and sellers. 
iStock First of all, DiClerico said, look around you. Make sure the pool fits in the backyard without violating zoning laws, he says. These parameters depend on the area, but according to him, pools should generally be at least 1.5 metres from the property boundary and at some distance from the main building, perhaps 12 or 15 metres. In addition, proximity to power lines and underground utilities is an important factor, and many municipalities require a permit for pool installation. Before you buy, consult your local building inspector, DiClerico advises. DiClerico. If you have chosen municipal logistics, you should also consider whether your landscape is suitable for a swimming pool. Is your property on a slope or are there large trees or rocks in the way? Mr. DiClerico said. You may have to pay for their removal or relocation. And don’t forget that in some places there are rules for removing trees. The stability of the bottom can also be a factor, depending on the size of the pool you are considering. If the ground is very soft and sandy, you may need to make adjustments before installing the pool, he says.

Generally, guests are covered for injuries that may occur while using the pool, but the pool itself is not covered for potential damage, DiClerico said. Many vendors require you to install a childproof fence or gate before considering a cover. The obvious advantage of above-ground pools over in-ground pools is cost, DiClerico says. According to HomeAdvisor’s Real Cost Guide, most people spend between $1,000 and $4,000 on an in-ground pool – an average of $2,500 – compared to $50,000 for an in-ground pool, which can easily top six figures if you add luxuries like a hot tub and a waterfall. With an in-ground pool, the lower limit of the budget, up to about $1,000, is limited by size and shape. For $1,000, you get no more than a basic 12-foot round with no accessories, DiClerico says. As the price increases, pools become larger and more varied in shape, including rectangular, oval and hexagonal. The largest and most sophisticated versions of these 20′ x 40′ above ground structures cost about $4,500. And how much do you have to spend? Consider how you want to use the pool, advises DiClerico. If you just need a private place to relax and unwind, a simple lap top will do, he says. If you want to use it for entertainment or to play with children, you’ll need a larger pool with an adjacent deck and additional safety features, such as a fence and removable ladder to prevent children from entering the pool unsupervised. When setting your budget, keep in mind a few additional items – pool kits, liners, sidewalls, liners, pump and ladder – can add to the overall price.

An experienced do-it-yourselfer, with the help of a few handyman friends, can complete the installation in a few hours or a day, depending on the size and scope of the pool. Decide in advance if you want someone else to do the installation, and inquire in advance about the schedule and cost. When you contract for a pool installation, check to see if the work and the pool are covered by a warranty and check the terms. Your pump and above ground filter require electricity to operate. DiClerico states that a special 110/20 amp line is required and that the pool must be wired and grounded – contact the pool manufacturer and, if necessary, contact an electrician to ensure that all connections are safe and compliant. 
iStock If you are going for a larger, more expensive pool and have a smaller budget, you may want to invest in some additional features. The lighting is a great improvement for enjoying the pool on warm summer evenings, DiClerico notes. There are now underwater and floating lighting options that add a little flair. Heating is another improvement DeClerico favors, as it extends the pool’s use time in a four-season climate. If you want to make it too crazy, you can add a fountain or waterfall to your in-ground pool, DiClerico says. Free-standing fountains are the most affordable, he says, or you can add in-ground fountains with landscaping. In this price range, we’re talking about inflatable pools – think kids’ adult pools, DiClerico says. They are affordable and very easy to use, but are not meant to be a permanent solution. This means that at the end of the swimming season you must drain and store the pool. And watch out for sharp objects, especially small pebbles thrown by the lawn mower, they can cause permanent damage to the cheaper version.
