After a brief departure in 2013, Golden State Warriors forward Andre Iguodala has signed a one-year deal with the team, which will keep him in the Bay Area for the 2016-17 season. The 31-year-old has been an important part of the Warriors’ success over the past five seasons, earning a reputation as one of the NBA’s premier defenders and a solid 3-point shooter.
Andre Iguodala is returning to the Golden State Warriors for his third season, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. He played the final year of his contract with the Philadelphia 76ers last season. The two-time NBA All-Star will sign a one-year, $1.5 million deal, according to Wojnarowski.
Former Warriors forward Andre Iguodala has given the Warriors the green light to pursue a contract extension with him, and that’s a good thing for the team and its fans. Andre Iguodala has agreed to return to the Golden State Warriors, according to his agent, Brandon Rosenthal of Landmark Sports, who confirmed the news to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Friday.
The 37-year-old swingman played six seasons with the Warriors (2013-2019), earning three NBA titles, before joining the Miami Heat for the last two seasons. The Heat rejected a $15 million club option for next season last week.
Last season, Iguodala averaged only 4.4 points in 21.3 minutes over 63 games, but he will play a key leadership role for the club he helped win three NBA championships with.
“Who’d have guessed I’d be able to return to the place where I was able to have, whatever you want to call it, legacy years in terms of achievements, numerous championships, and the connections I was able to establish with some of my best friends and teammates?” On Friday, Iguodala told the New York Times.
“The chance to finish it here, the connection with the people, the relationship with the Bay, was simply something unique.”
Iguodala, the 2015 Finals MVP, is still one of the game’s most respected veterans, and his ties to the Warriors’ locker room, particularly with star guard Stephen Curry, will facilitate a smooth transition back to his former club.
Over the years, Iguodala has been lauded for his basketball IQ, with Warriors coach Steve Kerr frequently declaring Iguodala to be one of the brightest players he has ever taught.
Iguodala, who is entering his 18th NBA season, has received Hall of Fame praise from Kerr in recent years and will provide the type of solid, veteran wing the Warriors were missing at times during a 2020-21 season in which they failed to make the playoffs after losing in the inaugural play-in tournament to the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies.
With the Warriors, Iguodala won NBA titles in 2015, 2017 and 2018. The 17-year veteran has averaged 11.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists during his career.
After last season, Iguodala considered retiring, but he realized that he still had “some more time left.”
Iguodala told the New York Times, “Where I’m comfortable is I can determine when I’m ready to play.” “I believe I’ll depart with only a smidgeon remaining. I’m not going out on one leg. I know I have a few more years in me. It’s entirely up to me to decide whether it’s one, two, three, or whatever. I’m not even going to mention three. Possibly one or two.”
On Friday, the Warriors made forward Nemanja Bjelica’s free agency signing to the league minimum official. The Serbian big man will earn $2,089,448 after saying, “This is the greatest match for me right now.”
Last season, he played 16.1 minutes per game with three starts between Sacramento and Miami, averaging 6.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists.
The Warriors and Stephen Curry agreed to a $215 million, four-year contract deal earlier this week, which would keep him on the team through the 2025-26 season, when he will be 38.
In addition, Golden State has agreed to trade power forward Eric Paschall to the Jazz in exchange for a protected second-round draft choice in 2026 through Memphis. In the play-in tournament, the Grizzlies terminated the Warriors’ season.
