There is no doubt that Baker Mayfield is the most talked about and talked about player in camp. Because of this, some fans are beginning to wonder, just how big of a role will they play in his success this year. Mayfield was drafted, after all, because he was viewed as a high potential playmaker to help lead a young and inexperienced team. With a season under his belt and another training camp to go, some wonder if he is ready to take the next step in his development.

Baker Mayfield – the rookie quarterback who drew the hype this summer and was considered by many to be the frontrunner for the starting job before the preseason even started – has impressed the Browns coaching staff so far.

The Browns are expected to have their best season in years coming up, and a good part of that is because of the team’s two stars. Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr. are both expected to be first round draft picks this year, but both are expected to make huge impacts. Beckham has been a Pro Bowler every year since entering the league, and is likely going to be one again this year. Mayfield is the team’s starting quarterback and is also expected to be a first round pick. If Mayfield and Beckham are both stars, the Browns will be a top team in the AFC North.. BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Browns have been at training camp for nearly two weeks. Here’s what we’ve learnt thus far, as well as what to look out for in the future:

What to Look Out For

Mayfield’s contract extension

Josh Allen became the first quarterback from the 2018 draft class to sign a contract extension last week with the Buffalo Bills.

According to insiders, the Browns and quarterback Baker Mayfield’s agent have been in contact this summer, but have yet to really engage on a contract extension. The Josh Allen announcement, on the other hand, may be the catalyst for such talks, since the contract essentially established the price for the 2018 QB draft class, which includes Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens. Allen will earn an average of $43 million each year, which will serve as a guideline for the Browns.

While Bills GM Brandon Beane indicated he would end contract talks with Allen once the season started, Browns GM Andrew Berry said his front staff would be open to discussing rookie deals once the season started. As a result, the Allen announcement does not imply that a Mayfield extension will occur overnight. And the debates may go on for the rest of the season. In any case, it doesn’t seem to bother Mayfield.

“I’m not the one doing the negotiating, so I don’t give a damn,” he remarked on Sunday. “I’m concerned about winning Week 1, then moving on to Week 2 and concentrating on that week. And that’s how I’m thinking. So, no matter how many times this question is asked during the year, I’ll always give the same response because it’s the truth.”

The uncovering of Odell

During 7-on-7 and team exercises, Odell Beckham Jr has been kept to the side thus far. However, as OBJ returns from a season-ending knee injury last year, coach Kevin Stefanski has indicated that he may play more this week.

You’d never guess Beckham was coming back from an ACL injury by seeing him in individual and passing drills. The speed, slashes, and explosiveness are all as razor-sharp as they’ve always been. The next stage will be to put Beckham in game-like circumstances before the season starts.

Delpit, Walker, and Harrison are back!

Defensively, the Browns have been missing three important players thus far: safety Grant Delpit and Ronnie Harrison Jr., as well as linebacker Anthony Walker. Delpit is coming off a season-ending Achilles injury and now has a hamstring problem to contend with. Harrison has a hamstring injury as well. Walker, on the other hand, was forced to leave camp early due to a knee ailment.

The Browns are still hoping to get all three players back before the start of the season. They must first get them off the exercise bikes and onto the practice field.

DE Takkarist McKinley’s situation is considerably more complicated. During many practices, McKinley was clearly ill. Now he’s gone from the squad, and Stefanski says he doesn’t know when McKinley will be back. With Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney on the defensive line, the Browns are in excellent condition. However, McKinley’s absence has harmed their depth.

What we’ve discovered

Peoples-Jones is taking a big step forward.

On a roster that features Pro Bowlers Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry, as well as Mayfield-security-blanket Rashard Higgins, it’s been Donovan Peoples-Jones who’s stolen the show among the receivers. The second-year pro out of Michigan has been in sync with Mayfield all camp, underscored by several big plays in Sunday’s Orange & Brown scrimmage.

Mayfield added later, “Donovan and I, we worked a lot this summer.” “He seems to be in excellent shape. He deserves kudos. He’s put in the effort. Right now, he seems to be amazing. A clever man who can run faster. He can also play a variety of positions.”

DPJ is definitely fourth in the receiving pecking order despite being Cleveland’s training camp MVP so far. However, with an offense loaded with weapons, the former sixth-round pick may prove to be a vital component.

Defensively, Clowney is the X-factor.

Clowney might have 100 sacks in camp if defensive ends were permitted to attack quarterbacks. Despite undergoing season-ending knee surgery last season, the No. 1 overall selection in 2014 has been one of the most outstanding players so far. Clowney is having a good time, as shown by his hustle and enthusiasm.

“You have a lot of fun when you’re healthy,” Clowney added. “It’s not enjoyable being out there when you’ve been playing for seven years — and I’ve been dealing with injuries for seven years — but I believe it’s great and thrilling to be out there moving about and feeling good when you’re taking care of your body, you’re in excellent condition, and you know what you love.”

Clowney hasn’t exactly been destroying scrubs on the field. Clowney has mostly faced All-Pro right tackle Jack Conklin, who said Clowney “brings a whole new level of toughness.”

Of course, staying healthy will be crucial for Clowney. If he does, the Browns may have the league’s best pass-rushing combination, with Defensive Player of the Year contender Garrett on the opposite side.

Secondary education has greatly improved.

Last season, the Browns were at the bottom of the league in opponent QBR allowed, owing to their secondary problems. Cleveland’s pass coverage has already shown signs of improvement this season.

Safety In 7-on-7 and team passing drills, John Johnson III has provided a calming influence to a back end that has been giving the Browns offensive problems at times. Johnson has taken advantage of the situation. But, more importantly, he’s always talking and putting his teammates in the best possible situations.

The acquisitions of Troy Hill at nickel and youngster Greg Newsome II at corner have also made an impact. With cornerback Denzel Ward still in Pro Bowl shape, the Browns have the potential and depth to create one of the league’s most improved defensive backfields, if not one of the best.

For the second consecutive summer, the Cleveland Browns open camp with anticipation of a new era. This time last year, the team was a mess, with a first-year head coach, a rookie quarterback, and a pair of rookie running backs. The 2018 squad has a strong foundation, led by a rookie quarterback who has been compared to Tom Brady.. Read more about browns news today and let us know what you think.
