The coach of Florida, Dan Mullen, said his team could have pulled out of the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on Wednesday-evening because of the players’ availability, but he decided to do it anyway because the players wanted to participate.
After the loss of 55-20 on Nr. 6 Oklahoma, Mullen said his reduced squad allowed the Gators to miss the game.
With the number of people who came to the game, we were really below the numbers, Mullen said. We had the numbers so we wouldn’t play the game.
Mr Mullen added: I give our boys the credit they deserve. … Our young people wanted to play that game, they wanted that experience and they wanted to be on that stage.
On Tuesday, Mullen estimated that he would have 60 players at the fair. The SEC has set a minimum number of 53 players who can play this season, but teams can play if they don’t reach that number. The Minutemen also have three key positions: Quarterbacks (one), defenders (four) and offensive liners (seven).
Mullen did not indicate whether the alligators were in a certain position below the low point.
I kind of… I don’t know if it’s wrong…. This is not the 2020 football team you’ve seen, said Mullen of the Gators, who finished 8-4 after losing their last three games. There are 25 boys missing from the 2020 football team. For us it was a kind of impulse for the future, an opportunity for young people to play.
Mr Mullen added: The last game of the 2020 team was 11 days ago [in the SEC championship].
Among the missing alligators there were several starters. The top three recipients – Kadarius Toney, Trevon Grimes and Jacob Copeland – all fell out, as did the Kyle Pitts of the Stars. Grimes, Pitts and Toney came out because they were getting ready for the NFL Draft, and Copeland came out because it tested positive for VOCID-19. The Gators didn’t have four defensive entrances either.
The lack of season tickets has had a significant impact on Heisman Trophy finalist Kyle Trask. The senior threw three interceptions and had not thrown a touchdown pass after entering the game with 43 meters pass. The completion rate (57.1%) was also low this season. Sophomore quarterback Emory Jones also had a lot of playing time in this game. He made 16 attempts and ran 10 times for 60 yards and a score.
Oklahoma (9-2) dominated Florida with 684 yards, of which 435 yards in the race. Earlier, coach Lincoln Riley said that we decided to be a team on a mission and wanted to make a statement about how we play.
Downtown Oklahoma City, Creed Humphrey said we saw the rejection [of alligators]. In this game, it didn’t matter who left and who stayed. We were always willing to skate and play against them, whoever it was. We’re glad they came and gave us a chance to play.
The Sooners also said they were aware of comments from Florida linebacker James Houston, who said last week that Oklahoma is a good game, but not at our level. Oklahoma freshman Marvin Mims said it certainly stirred the fire a little, and future quarterback Spencer Rattler twittered after the game that it was a good game.
I’d be lying if I said we couldn’t see what our opponent said, Rattler said later. We did our job, we concentrated on what we had to do as a group, and we came out victorious.
