With the playoffs neck and neck and the roasting season a month away, there’s no quarter of production to miss in the rankings either. The biggest purge of these rankings this week of the season includes 38 players who have been dropped from the squad for reasons ranging from injuries to roster changes and from a lack of scoring ability to too many goals conceded.
Every little fantasy point has a lot of room for improvement when you look at these rankings. And I mean that literally. If you use the projections for the rest of the season, that one power play goal is the real difference between 120th and about 175th among skaters. Andrei Vasilevskiy will get the most fantasy points the rest of the season, but Connor Hellebuyck will only need two more wins to surpass his projection. Any increase or decrease in production is accompanied by a decrease in the number of games that can be played.
Speaking of the number of games: The Canucks’ new team means at least two NHL games this season won’t count in the ESPN.com fantasy leagues. The final two games against the Calgary Flames fall outside the (already extended) lockout period for Week 13 leagues. May. That means two fewer games for your team’s players, which unfortunately is not surprising this season.
2 Connected
The number of games remaining has a big impact on the remaining fantasy roster. The Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets have just 12 games, while the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks have 17 (remember, two of the remaining 19 Canucks don’t count here). While those four games made little difference at the beginning of the season, they now make up a third of the remaining schedule for the teams at the bottom of the ladder of games played.
This is another point that makes the Bruins’ acquisition of Taylor Hall a polarizing and intriguing fantasy prospect.
Progress
Taylor Hall, W, Boston Bruins (39th): Getting Hall into the top 40 by this move is risky, but calculated. Forget his MVP season for a moment and just look at the games he played in 2018-19 before his knee problems: Hall averaged 2.48 fantasy points per game (FPPG) in that span and scored 11 goals in 33 games. Let’s assume for a moment that he approaches that pace and achieves 2.3 FPPG like Brown – that would be 39.1 fantasy points, which is more than the current projections for all but 10 skaters in the league. The Bruins are expected to make their Hall debut with second-round pick David Krejci, but it wouldn’t hurt to shake things up and put him on the first line. Hall will also have every opportunity to succeed on the power play. Here he is in the top 40, but in the top 10. (And yes, we said the same thing before this season about Hall’s chances with the Sabres, but that doesn’t make it any less plausible).
Elias Pettersson, F, Vancouver Canucks (35th place): The Canucks still plan to play again on Friday, and it looks like the chance to get back on the ice went well for some members of the team on Monday. Not only do they get a major fantasy boost with a full 17 game schedule left, but it also looks like the club is getting back to health with their star striker Pettersson. Pettersson’s numbers are down this season since the 2nd quarter. Disappointing March, but he warmed up just before his injury. He’s been demoted in over 10% of leagues, which is enough to take the time to check your roster for free agents.

Anthony Manta, W, Washington Capitals (97th place): Before this relatively disastrous season for the Red Wings offense, Mantha was building something special. Beginning with the 2017-18 season, his FSU numbers were built on three preseason years: 1.55, 1.75 and 2.08. But Mantha has scored just 1.3 FPPG this season, with the connection to Dylan Larkin not taking the next step (to the detriment of both). This new start with the Caps could be the beginning of an upward trend as the Bombers reach their peak. Let’s just say a role in the top 6 and some decent minutes on the power play bring him back to 1.8 FPPG and into the top 100 for the rest of the season. He should be added from the trade deadline, as there is a margin for him to not meet that threshold and maintain fantastic value.
Protection in motion
Brandon Montour, D, Florida Panthers (ranked 94th): To reiterate a point from our ESPN.com fantasy trade deadline summary: Keith Yandle doesn’t play on the power play, and Montour has what it takes. Montour is not a versatile defender and will not be able to replace Aaron Ekblad, but he can be fantastic on the power play.
Goalkeeper in motion
I’m not pointing the finger at any particular player, I’m just pointing out that the minimum number of games has distilled the stats of goalies even further than skaters. Not that Elvis Merzlikins should be used in fantasy, but as an example: He played in 53% of the Blue Jackets’ games over the past month and has 12 remaining. So at best he has six more games to help your team?
