Mia Farrow plays Joan of Arc in the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her husband, André Previn, conducts the London Symphony Orchestra.

Andre Previn was the second husband of actress Mia Farrow.

Known for his Oscar-winning film scores and for his many years as a pianist and music director, the famous musician was one of the most influential figures in music history at the end of the 20th century. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 89.

Here’s what you need to know about André Previn:

1. Previn began his career as a teenager in Beverly Hills in the 1940s.

Previn was born in Berlin in 1929, but his family moved to California when he was a child. He studied music composition in his youth and played in the California Youth Symphony Orchestra as a teenager, according to Variety. At the age of 17, the Beverly Hills High School student worked at MGM Studios as a music arranger.

They were always looking for someone who was talented, fast and cheap, and because I was a kid, I was all three, Previn once told the Washington Post.

But the future superstar had big dreams.

At MGM you knew you’d be working the next year, you knew you’d be getting paid, he told The Guardian in 2008. But I was too musically ambitious to accept it. And I wanted to play with every talent I had.

Previn took an interest in classical music and became principal conductor of the Houston Symphony Orchestra in 1967. Later he was appointed chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra.  He later became a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Royal London Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

2. Previn once had an innocent encounter with Ava Gardner.

There are no minor similarities in the 1991 briefs: In My Days in Hollywood, Previn recounts how he met the film siren Ava Gardner while working at MGM.

She listened to me when I played, intensely, he writes, according to The Washington Post.  And then he asked the incredible question: Do you want to walk me home later?

Previn admitted that as a 17-year-old, he didn’t know what to make of the movie star’s request.

Well, I was 17 and couldn’t afford to include a subtext, so I asked: You mean you can’t get a ride home? – he wrote. Ava looked at me for a long time, saw that I meant it, apologized and got up from the piano bench.

3. Previn has been married 5 times and has had several wives

Previn has been married five times and has had a total of 10 children, according to the news. His first wife was the jazz singer Betty Bennett in 1952.  Seven years later, he married fellow composer Dori Langdon Previn of Valley of the Dolls. After that, Farrow had six children, three biological and three adopted, according to People. The two stars were married from 1970 to 1979.

After divorcing Farrow, Previn married Heather Sneddon, which was his longest marriage in over 15 years. His last marriage was with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. The couple divorced in 2006 after four years of marriage.

4. Previn’s second wife, Dori Langdon, returned to him after he had an affair with Mia Farrow.

Previn’s marriage to his second wife Dory, a talented lyricist, did not end well. When Previn left Langdon for Farrow, the Oscar-nominated lyricist applauded, according to the Post-Gazette.

Langdon’s song, Bare of Young Girls, is about the relationship between Previn and Farrow.  It contains a text about a 24-year-old girl admiring her unmade bed. Farrow was 25 when she married the 49-year-old Previn.

5. Previn won 4 Oscars, 10 Grammy Awards and was even knighted by Queen.

Previn’s film scores for Gigi, Porgy and Bess (1959), Irma La Douce (1963) and My Fair Lady (1964), written in 1958, won four Oscars, according to Reuters.

He also won 10 Grammy Awards for his films and recordings and received the Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2009. Previn was also honored by the Kennedy Center on NPR in 1998 and knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1996.
