In a NFC South that may be shaping up to be the best division in football, the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints represent the best of the best. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been more of a disappointment, however, and while they have a lot of talent, they haven’t been able to turn this potential into consistent success. That is about to change, though, if the Seattle Seahawks have their way.
For what it’s worth, I’m told that one of the NFL’s most-watched television shows, the Thursday night football “The Star” on CBS, will air a special about Julio Jones and the Atlanta Falcons this evening, and it’s not going to be good for the Seattle Seahawks.
Seahawks fans have been upset about the lack of movement on the trade front regarding Julio Jones, and I am not talking about the current state of the team. The Hawks currently have WR Doug Baldwin, WR Paul Richardson, and WR Tyler Lockett who can earn their place as a starting receiver, but with the injuries to WR Tyler Lockett and WR Paul Richardson and the emergence of WR Jermaine Kearse, it could be a long-shot for the Seahawks to trade for a star wide receiver like Julio Jones.

Brady Henderson SEATTLE – If the Seattle Seahawks want to get Julio Jones, it should be done in a similar way to the deal to acquire Jadeveon Clowney in 2019. The Seahawks kept an eye on Clowney all summer, but didn’t want to take the huge salary he would receive under the terms of the franchise deal. They only acquired him in a weekend of cuts after the Houston Texans agreed to pay nearly half of what he was owed. If Seattle wants to bring in a seven-time Pro Bowl winner, the Atlanta Falcons will almost certainly have to do something similar with Jones. The problem is that everything points to the Falcons not being interested in spending the money to trade Jones. In fact, that’s one of the many problems that kept Jones from getting a chance in Seattle. The Seahawks have discussed the possibility of a trade, as reported by ESPN’s Deanna Russini. This should come as no surprise given their philosophy, in which they often claim to consider all possible matches. A source with the team described the Seahawks’ interest in Jones as just that – Seattle’s front office conducting its usual investigation. What you need to know about the Seattle Seahawks:

He has three years and over $38 million left, including a $15.3 million salary for 2021. According to Overthecap.com, the Roster Management System and the NFLPA, the Seahawks have about $7 million in cap space, not including the extension they just gave to punter Michael Dickson. As always, some of the available funds are for the coaching staff and injury replacements. The Seahawks could free up a few million dollars by restructuring the contracts of Russell Wilson and/or Bobby Wagner, but that would have negative implications for the future. In Wilson’s case, this would be particularly troublesome because converting salary to a signing bonus would push significant costs to the end of his contract, making it more expensive to tag him or extend him. That deferred fee comes on top of the already huge amount of dead money the Seahawks will have to pay if they trade him before that date. There’s a reason the Seahawks rarely resort to such changes. They have only used them twice, in 2017, to facilitate the acquisitions of Sheldon Richardson and Dwayne Brown, expensive purchases caused by injuries to Malik McDowell and George Fant. Richardson and Brown were needed so the Seahawks could justify the negative impact of restructuring Wilson and Doug Baldwin’s contracts. But Jones would be a luxury in a receiving corps that already includes Tyler Lockett, D.K. Metcalfe and second-round pick D’Wayne Eskridge. The Seahawks just extended Lockett’s contract for $69 million, making him the 10th highest paid receiver in the NFL in terms of average annual salary. Metcalfe is eligible for a mega return after this season. What if Jones, 32, who played just nine games last season and will likely have to remain in service mode, also asked for a new contract?

They separated from their 2022. The first round pick in the trade for Jamal Adams, so they’ve already given a quality cap space in what should be a very crowded draft. When you add it all up, it’s a deal the Seahawks should like, if it comes to fruition. The worst case scenario is that he joins the San Francisco 49ers team instead. That means Seattle will have to play Jones twice during the season with a questionable group of cornerbacks. This raises another question: Wouldn’t the Seahawks be better off putting their resources into improving this position, the weakest on their roster? There may never be a strong market for Jones, and the Falcons will be forced to absorb some of his salary. That would make trading with Seattle much more realistic. That’s unlikely at this stage. But yeah, the Seahawks didn’t think they could get Clowney until they did.Seahawks fans will have to wait awhile longer before they get their first glimpse at the offense of the Atlanta Falcons. Julio Jones, the team’s best wide receiver, is likely going to sit out the season after suffering a foot injury in the Falcons season-opening loss to the Eagles in Philadelphia on September 6.
