Denise Crosby, who played Tasha Yar and Sela on Star Trek: Next Generation met with some of its former employees on Saturday for a conference organized by GalaxyCon. Crosby, Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T. Riker) and Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troy’s ship advisor) talked about their work on TNG and shared some behind-the-scenes details that gave fans a better understanding of what it’s like on set.

The actors also answered questions from fans. One fan asked the Star Trek stars to what extent they had contributed to bringing a touch of nuance to their characters during the series. Although Frakes stated that he had had several conversations with the writers about Riker, Sirtis and Crosby said that the writers did not seem very interested in talking to them.

Nevertheless, Ms. Crosby that she had the opportunity to contribute creatively after she left the show. This position was the basis of the episode she played in.

What was Crosby’s idea?

Crosby explained how this happened. She said that after she returned for an episode of Yesterday’s Enterprise, she had lunch with one of the presenters, Rick Berman. During that meal, she came up with an idea in response to what happened on the Enterprise yesterday.

In this episode, Crosby plays an alternate version of his original heroine, Tasha Yar. This version of Yara eventually came back to another time with the Enterprise-C crew. She did so for many reasons, including the fact that she had fallen in love with Richard Castillo, a crew member of the Enterprise-C.

Crosby told Berman she’d like to know what happened to Yar in the Enterprise-C timeline. She told a story in which Yar became pregnant with Castillo’s child and was then captured by the Romulans. When the Romulans discovered that Yar was pregnant, they gave birth to her and used the child as leverage to negotiate with the crew of Enterprise-C. She floated the idea that a human child could be raised by the Romulans and return as an enemy of the Federation.

Crosby told the panelists that Berman seemed interested in the idea, but she didn’t expect to hear from him.

His idea became a two-part buyout.

Still, Crosby got an answer from Berman. She said she was surprised when he called her back after a while and told her he wanted to implement his idea. He had different attitudes, he told her.

Berman decided that Yar’s daughter should not be Castillo’s father, but the father of a Romulan general, which would make her half-human, half-Romulan. It opened a piece of history in which Yar’s daughter returned to the Enterprise as part of the Romulan conspiracy. The character, called Sela, was played by Crosby himself.

Sela has appeared in four episodes of TNG. In the episode Eye of the Mind, only Sela’s voice was heard. Hero was part of a plan to brainwash Lieutenant Geordi LaForge into killing the Klingon leader.

Sela was first seen by viewers in both parts of Redemption. These episodes are based on the lunch story from Crosby to Berman. The final plotline concerns the Berman adjustments Crosby made to the character.

The character reappeared in the second part of the two-part encounter. In this episode, Sela was part of the Romulan faction that actively opposed the reunification of the Vulcans and Romulans.

So not only did Crosby come back to play the girl in her own character, but she had to do it because of the idea she came up with.
