If you thought England’s win over India in the final of the World Cup was impressive, wait until you see what Joe Root did at Lord’s. The England captain scored a hundred in a match-saving knock, even as the latter stages of the match proved to be a nail-biter. Having reached the target of 309 with six overs still to go, Root was at his nonchalant best as he proceeded to stay calm in the face of some tough Indian bowling. But what made this knock even more special was that the innings was run out by Ravindra Jadeja, who dived to his left at square leg to catch the ball one foot short of the crease. His 157 at the weekend was so good that some England fans were wistful for the days of Marcus Trescothick, who had put on over 1000 at Lord’s with Kevin Pietersen.

After India’s late-day comeback, England captain Joe Root produced his second magnificent century in less than a week, but the second Test remains tantalizingly poised.
Root led the home team to victory at Lord’s, just as he did at Trent Bridge last Saturday, batting for an unbroken 180 on a sunny day.
Jonny Bairstow contributed 57, his first Test half-century in two years, while Moeen Ali and Jos Buttler contributed 27 and 23 respectively.
Ishant Sharma dismissed Moeen Ali and Sam Curran in quick succession, just as England seemed to be on their way to a comfortable first-innings advantage.
Off the last ball of a thrilling, exciting day, the hosts were bowled out for 391 – a 27-run lead.
India’s second innings will now determine the course of the match, with the visitors ready to bat on a surface that remains sluggish and flat, although with the odd suggestion of low bounce.
Peerless Root has done it once again.
England were frail in the first Test, and were in a dangerous position when India reached 276-3 on the opening day here, but they have battled back thanks to two all-time greats in their side, Joe Root and James Anderson.
Root is delivering the kind of batting that few in the history of the English game have been capable of, and there aren’t many superlatives left for him, just as there weren’t many for Anderson when he returned 5-62 on Friday.
This was his sixth century of 2021, based on ten tests. He was only denied the chance to become the first England player to score three double hundreds in a single season because he ran out of partners.
From 48 not out overnight, it seemed inevitable that Root would take advantage of excellent batting conditions in the second over of the day when he drove to the point boundary.
Almost no runs were scored on the ground. Off-side drives and punches off the front and back feet, precise dabs to third man, and whips and flicks off the pads were the order of the day. He never got bogged down, racing between the wickets like it was his life on the line.
Root, like last week, was energetic and emotional as he celebrated his 22nd century, pounding the air and screaming to the skies.
More was to follow, including a spectacular reverse scoop off Mohammed Siraj’s pace, with Root staying immovable and soaking up the ovation as the last man standing.

While Root was left to bat on his own at Trent Bridge, the assistance he got from the middle order not only helped England get back into the game, but it may also auger well for the future.
Bairstow has had a tumultuous two years, in which he has been dropped, returned, rested, and shuffled about the order.
In Nottingham, he showed flashes of what he could do, and he went much farther here, scoring easily in the opening hour. Despite reaching his first fifty on this ground since the 2019 Ashes Test, the sadness is that he was out pulling for the second time in a week, allowing Siraj to slip.
Buttler seemed out of touch, but he was only getting his bearings until he was bowled through the gate, while the returned Moeen Ali’s judgment was impeccable before edging to first slip.
Last man Anderson bravely came through being hit on the helmet by Jasprit Bumrah during a barrage of short-pitched bowling before being cleaned up by Mohammed Shami. India’s tenacity pays off.
The Indian assault had an energy-sapping day, but they overcame the heat and the pitch to consistently beat the bat.
They may come to regret leaving out off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, despite the fact that it was the guy who was favoured – speed bowler Ishant – who ignited the late comeback.
Curran edged his opening ball to second slip after Ishant caught Moeen. England had lost three wickets for 16 runs when Ollie Robinson was lbw.
In reality, India’s openers were undoubtedly pleased not to have to face the new ball on Saturday evening, but it will be the visitors who will be under greater pressure when the match begins on Sunday.
They replied, “We can come with fire in our stomachs.”

“India is under pressure today,” says former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta. They will be put under strain if they lose a couple of early wickets.
“KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja have scored the most of the runs thus far. The middle order is having trouble and has a lengthy tail.”

For all Indians, cricket is a religion and the biggest sport in the country. For England, it is a sport that they have taken seriously and one that is slowly making them a contender in international cricket.
