Ron Kind, a Democrat from the 3rd district of Wisconsin, announced he will retire at the end of his current term in 2018. Representative Kind was first elected in 2008 but decided to run again for his current seat in 2016. His retirement will be effective January 3, 2018.

Kind hinted earlier this year that he was contemplating a bid for the United States Senate. That does not seem to be in the works at the moment. In fact, he doesn’t seem to have any plans to seek for re-election to his present position.
He has said that he would not seek re-election in 2022.

Despite Kind’s longevity, Wisconsin’s 3rd District is probably the most “swingy” in the state. Wisconsin has long been regarded as one of the nation’s most competitive swing states. Kind’s success has been ascribed in part to his role as a committed moderate. He has chaired the moderate New Democrat Coalition twice.
According to Politico, his decision to resign may be a major setback for House Democrats. The 2018 midterm elections may be difficult, given the House’s already precarious majority. Midterm election outcomes have historically favored the party that is not in power at the time.
There are many additional things to consider. Not least of them is the re-districting plan for 2022, which is expected to benefit Republicans.
Democrats had hoped for something more in line with the Republicans’ overwhelming showing in 2002. It’s possible that Kind’s decision to leave his position has made things more difficult. It also seems to be part of a pattern.
He joins a group of Democrats from swing districts who have decided not to seek for re-election in 2022.
Kind formerly served as the Democratic Party’s top deputy whip.
Ron Kind excelled in both academics and athletics as a child. On a scholarship, he would attend Harvard and graduate with honors. He went on to the London School of Economics for his master’s degree.
Followed by a law degree from the University of Minnesota. After working for Quarles & Brady, he became an assistant district attorney of La Crosse County, Wisconsin. Around the same time, he worked as a staffer for prominent Wisconsin U.S. Senator William Proxmire.
In 1996, high-profile Republican Steve Gunderson was elected to the House of Representatives from Wisconsin’s 3rd District. He had previously said that he will not seek re-election in the previous election cycle. Kind would defeat former State Assemblyman and Senator James Harsdorf, a Republican, for the seat. Over the years, he would win the seat 12 more times.
Kind was eventually appointed the Democratic main deputy whip. But especially as an outspoken supporter of breaking up the Democratic leadership team.
Kind has been mentioned as a potential governor or Senate contender on many occasions. He is a co-founder of the Upper Mississippi River Congressional Caucus and the Congressional Wildlife Refuge Caucus.
