No. 3 seeded Arizona fought hard in the first quarter and led 32-22 at halftime against No. 1 seeded UConn.
Aari MacDonald continued her rise as the tournament’s top scorer with 15 points in the first half. Against her, UConn star Paige Buchers scored five points, all in the first quarter, and grabbed four rebounds.
McDonald extended his longest point streak by at least 10 points to 92 games. Sam Thomas had 8 points and 3 rebounds, but McDonald had a game where he shot at will and played with a lot of confidence.
During a break in a television interview, McDonald said she practices taking hundreds and thousands of photos. It pays, and I love it, she says.
The Wildcats are shooting 38% from the field, but more importantly, they are holding the Huskies to a score of just 32%. UConn, which has only lost one game this season, made just three three-point attempts and hit just one, while the Wildcats hit six three-point shots in the first half. The Huskies shot just eight times from the field.
I would call our defense stifling and stingy, McDonald said.

South Carolina will not dwell on a missed call, at least not publicly.
With less than two minutes to go in the fourth quarter and Stanford holding a three-point lead, South Carolina’s Zia Cooke was dribbling just past the three-point line when Lexie Hull’s right foot hit the ball. No official whistled and seven seconds later Stanford’s Cameron Brink set up the conversion.
She hit her foot, Cook said after the game. You didn’t call the jump ball. That’s it.
Don Staley, South Carolina’s coach, pointed out the difficulty of officiating.
They have a tough job, she said. Dreams are at stake. Everyone wants to compete for a national championship. I saw the ball get kicked. I didn’t make a point of it, but I don’t know what you want me to say. I can’t say much about them except that they have a difficult job.
After the game, Staley spoke with reporters via video conference and humbly began thinking about next season, especially considering how close the Gamecocks came to winning at the buzzer.
The margin of error is so small – it’s so small to compete for a national championship, to win a national championship, and it won’t be the last time we’re in this situation, she said. Next year we will have to train with a certain margin of error.

No. 3 seed Arizona defeated No. 1 seed UConn in the second quarter of the Final Four on Friday, but UConn had a big bright spot to celebrate.
Huskies guard Nika Muhl returned for her first appearance after being injured in the first round against High Point. She came into the game with just under three minutes left in the quarter.
Muhl, who suffered a sprained second ankle this season, was on crutches after injuring himself in the first round. It was every day until Friday night. She played three minutes in the first game, didn’t make a shot and didn’t get on the scoreboard after one quarter.
Led by Aari McDonald, who is averaging 32 points over the last two games, the Wildcats got off to an early 6-0 start. She finished the quarter with 8 points, 3 for 6 from the field.
However, UConn held Arizona scoreless for four minutes at the end of the frame for the Wildcats. Arizona responded late in the game, however, behind baskets from Sam Thomas.
UConn’s Paige Buchers finished the quarter with five points and three rebounds.

The Huskies could be led by freshman named by the Associated Press, Paige Buchers, and have no seniors in the starting lineup. But that doesn’t mean their veterans won’t play a crucial role in the dynasty’s return to the semifinals for the 13th consecutive season. I was playing for the first time.
The team’s three juniors, guards Christina Williams and Evina Westbrook and forward Olivia Nelson-Ododa, have played a key role in Connecticut’s run so far. Williams has scored much-needed baskets in the Huskies’ last two wins. She possesses the ability to take difficult shots on goal, as well as her range behind the 3-point line, while taking on some of the tougher defensive duties – typically Iowa freshman Caitlin Clark couldn’t find her rhythm due to Williams’ pressure.
I’ve had my ups and downs in my time here at UConn, everybody knows that,” Williams said after the 27-point game against Iowa. It’s just nice to play this basketball as well as I did today to show Christina Williams what I’ve got, because I’m a complete player and I feel like people have forgotten that.
Evina Westbrook, playing her first season with the Huskies, is also important to the Huskies’ defense. She went from longtime rival Connecticut State to Tennessee, which did not immediately make her transfer eligible after she transferred in 2019. The 6-foot-3 retired junior played all over the field in the biggest tournament of her career, nearly notching a triple-double in the round of 16.
Nelson-Ododa came to UConn with almost as much news buzz as the Bueckers, simply because the 6-foot-4 player has a generally available perfect score at the Powerade Jam Fest, the annual macaroni competition for top high school players. She hasn’t scored in college yet, but she has added another unlikely skill, especially for a player of her size: Nelson-Ododa has 11 assists in his last two games. Whether or not the Huskies advance to the national championship game, he can help his team find an open look.

Stanford’s dramatic victory over South Carolina in the national championship game was also a record.
Haley Jones, who finished with 24 points for the Cardinals, made a jumper in the third quarter to give Stanford its 55th win of the season. The previous record of 54 was broken by UConn in 2015. Stanford finished the tournament with 56 three-pointers in five games.
Stanford hit five three-pointers in the first three quarters, setting a record in five games in San Antonio. The Cardinals have been fanatical about shooting from the 3-point line all season. They shot 38.3 percent, which was the seventh-best percentage in the country through Friday night.
It wasn’t the most efficient night for the Cardinals at 42%, but they did make 63% of their 3-point shots and 5 of 8. Jones made two before winning two games.
Haley worked very hard, Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. She’s really improved, and she knows it. She’s not a freshman or sophomore anymore, she’s a leader on the field, and the confidence with which she plays has been a big boost for her.
We have to give credit to their defense, they made it difficult for the others, VanDerveer continued. Luckily, Haley was great.
Stanford and South Carolina also set a Final Four record by combining for 17 blocks, including 12 by the Cardinals.

The Cardinal, who are in first place, will be back in the national championship game for the first time since 2010 after a 66-65 defeat to the Gamecocks, who are in first place. A hard-fought game ended when South Carolina missed two shots in the final period of play after a steal with less than seven seconds left.
After a strong start by the Gamecocks, who scored 9 more points than the Cardinals in the first quarter, Stanford took control and led until the end of the third quarter. They gave South Carolina all they could handle, using the length of playmakers like Lexi Hull, who finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds, and the 6-foot Estonian Prechtel to neutralize the Gamecocks’ small lineup.
But at a relatively slow pace, neither team got a goal against. Every time South Carolina got close or even tied with the Cardinals, Stanford distanced itself – but not enough to feel comfortable. With four minutes left to play, Stanford took a five-point lead on a three-pointer by Cameron Brink (6-foot-3).
Destanny Henderson then hit a late 3-pointer to give South Carolina a one-point lead with 38.8 seconds left, and Haley Jones hit a 2-pointer to restore the score.

Basketball is often a running game, and it is, as Stanford leads South Carolina 52-49 entering the fourth quarter.
In the third, it was South Carolina’s turn again, at least initially.
Zia Cook hit from the 3-point arc, closed the half with 23 points and shot 5-of-7 from 3-point range to give the Gamecocks a 7-0 lead. South Carolina is not a 3-point team, but rather a 4-point team per game.
Despite Stanford’s strong defense, which limited the Gamecocks to 42% shooting, they had no answer for Cook.
On the other end, it was Haley Jones who led the Cardinals’ offense and scored 20 points, including seven for his team at one point. She scored 9 of her 11 goals from the field.
The Gamecocks were unable to break through Stanford’s depth despite strong performances from Cook and Aaliyah Boston, who contributed 9 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks.

Stanford extended its lead with an 11-0 run late in the first quarter and kept South Carolina off the scoreboard for three minutes in the second quarter to enter halftime with a 31-25 advantage.
The Gamecocks missed 10 consecutive shots after starting the game 5-for-7. Even when they were behind, Stanford found a way to capitalize, as in the case of Lacie Hull when he hit a 3-pointer to give the Cardinals a five-point lead.
Zia Cook finally scored midway through the quarter and led South Carolina by 12 points.
From that point on, South Carolina started scoring again.
Aaliyah Boston made a few key blocks to stop Stanford’s run. She had four blocks and nine rebounds.
A three-pointer by Eshten Prechtel kept Stanford in the lead.
Cardinal Haley Jones finished the half with nine points, all scored in the first quarter.

Final Four preparations took a detour for both coaches on Wednesday: Geno Auriemma of Connecticut and Don Staley of South Carolina spent more than an hour in a video conference with N.C.A.A. officials to discuss the management of their sport and the 2021 tournament.
A 70-minute session, organized by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and reviewed by The New York Times, came about after the lingering controversy between this year’s men’s and women’s tournaments. N.C.A.A. President Mark Emmert and two top basketball officials again apologized for mistakes made at the women’s tournament.
But Staley said he was concerned about Emmert’s plan to ask the bar to investigate inequities in N.C.A.A. championships.
Whoever pays the whistleblower will probably give you what you want to hear, said Staley, who asked Emmert if he could get someone independent of the coaches or the N.C.A.A. to investigate.
Emmert said the association has no history with the company it left for investigation, but acknowledged there is a potential problem.
I understand that there is reality and perception. I have great confidence in their independence in reality, but I also understand that there is this problem of perception, and that is what you are asking.
Mr. Emmert stated that he will continue to look into this issue and see what we can do to make sure that everyone knows that this issue is being looked at with open eyes and without bias.
Auriemma said he is concerned about the way women’s sports programs are handled at universities across the country. And he wondered aloud if women’s basketball shouldn’t work a little on its own.
I hate to say it, because I don’t like to give those guys credit, but the college football coaches decided we couldn’t handle it and it got completely out of hand and out of control, Auriemma said with a slight laugh. You are a crazy train, and God bless you for trying to keep this operation going. But maybe that’s what needs to happen to women’s basketball – maybe women’s basketball needs to separate itself from other women’s sports. But that wouldn’t be fair, because we’d be leaving behind a lot of people who need our help.
Auriemma’s thoughts should not be taken as an indication that the sport is about to be overhauled: The question whether women’s sports should operate completely or partially independent of the N.C.A.A. has been debated for over forty years. But in recent weeks, many coaches and executives, both public and private, have been thinking about how best to lead women’s basketball.

Destanny Henderson scored her first points early with a pair of free throws, and then the Gamecocks went on a 6-0 run, with Zia Cook (6 points) and Aaliyah Boston (3 rebounds) leading the way.
Before that, the Cardinals went on a 9-0 run at the end of the quarter that left the Gamecocks just over four minutes without a score. Haley Jones finished the quarter with nine points.

Parents of the Stanford women’s basketball team are excited to see them play. They are just as excited about the denouement of this N.C.A.A. women’s basketball tournament.
When the game is over and she gets on the bus to go to the hotel, we’re right behind the bus, Mike Williams, the father of senior guard Kiana Williams, said in an interview this week.
The team spent nine weeks of the season away from campus in Northern California and played its home games in a beach town about 45 miles away, while contact sports are banned in the county where the university is located. Parents were unable to interact with their children or watch them play from the stands for most of the season.
You forget what it’s like to look her in the eye when she walks off the field into the locker room, said Michelle Bain-Brink, mother of freshman forward Cameron Brink.
Bain-Brink only saw his daughter play for the Cardinals during the Pac-12 tournament, which Stanford won last month in Las Vegas.
In the stands, a group of 300 Stanford family members and friends took their task very seriously. They opened the semifinal between Stanford and South Carolina with a Cheer Go to Stanford.
It’s the second game of the day for Stanford – hours before they arrived at the Alamodome, the Cardinals crowned their table tennis tournament champion.

Many of the usual Final Four celebrations and events will not be held in San Antonio this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Despite this, the city is still home to many of the country’s best basketball players – even more than those competing for the basketball world title.
USA Basketball has scheduled its final 3×3 and USA training camp before the start of the W.N.B.A. season in May to coincide with the final weekend of the N.C.A.A. tournament in San Antonio. Many universities still participating in the college championships are honoring their alumni who trained in the final days before this year’s Olympics in Tokyo.
Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Stephanie Dolson and Tina Charles all played for UConn. At South Carolina, A’ja Wilson, Nneka Ogwumike, went to Stanford. South Carolina coach Don Staley is also the coach of the U.S. national team, but he has left training camp to his assistants while they focus on leading the Gamecocks to the N.C.A.A. tournament.
Some of the players will likely stay behind to cheer on their team – and determine the extent of their future competition. Obviously, their speed is their biggest asset, their ability to get anywhere at any time, Arizona senior Aari McDonald, who could be a top-10 pick in the upcoming W.N.B.A. draft, told Byrd this week. Their style of play translates well to the W.N.B.A., so it will be fun to see how they fare against Connecticut.

The unifying characteristic of these Final Four teams is depth and the ability to contain opponents’ depth.
San Antonio teams rely on their benches to win games late, or to consume enough reliable minutes for the Stars to take over in the fourth quarter. Although teams like Stanford and UConn came close early, depth played a crucial role.
Sometimes this benefits the starters as well – when the team can count on players sitting on the bench, giving the starters more room to carry their team, if necessary, late in the game.
The bench is a big part of who we are, and it will be very important for us to be able to lean on our bench, especially from deep, said Leticia Amichera of South Carolina, who contributed 10 points and eight rebounds for her team in Tuesday’s regional final at Texas.
Amira, who plays with a heavy knee brace as she recovers from two torn ligaments, is a secret weapon for the Gamecocks from the bench.
Especially now, at the tournament, we have to do our best, she said. We need to take a big step forward, because the bank is a big part of who we are. Being able to lean on the bench will be very important, especially now.
Trailing 38-26 at halftime of the eighth against Louisville, Stanford resorted to the bench in the second half. Esten Prechtel scored 16 points in 16 minutes and replaced starter Keanu Williams, who scored just 1-of-11 in the first 20 minutes. The Cardinals went on a 17-2 run in the third quarter, fueled by Preschel’s energy.
It looked like I had to put them away in the first half, Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer said. Maybe watching the first half made her realize what she needs to do better. Obviously you can’t expect someone to go 6-for-6 every game, but I liked the way she came back, she connected. She seemed very confident.
It’s very important to have that depth when everyone is excited about the other players, she said.
The difference is also due to the decrease in the Bank’s contribution. In Arizona’s Round of 16 victory over Indiana, the Wildcats’ bench scored 8-0 more than their counterparts and helped them to a 66-53 victory.
This post is especially helpful as Aari McDonald has dominated with 64 points in Arizona’s last two games.
UConn was in the bottom four of this tournament, despite some talented players on the team. Baylor was defeated in the eighth round by a single player on the bench.

A few years after Dawn Staley became head coach of South Carolina’s women’s basketball team, ESPN analyst Carolyn Peck decided to give her a gift. Peck, a former college and W.N.B.A. coach, noted the care with which Staley addressed each player on his team, taking the time to talk to each individually as they stretched before practice. She was surprised at how serious Ms. Staley took her responsibilities to the players and called herself a dream salesman.
Before the Gamecocks’ game, which Peck provided commentary for, he handed Staley a piece of the net she cut when she became the first black coach to win a national championship in women’s basketball with Purdue in 1999.
I saw that she had something special and that she had a chance to be next, Peck said. A few years later, Staley became the second coach of the Blacks to win the title, and he just pulled this piece out of his bag to show to reporters at the post-game press conference.
Since this week, seven black coaches have led teams to the Women’s Final Four. Two of those seven, Staley and Arizona coach Adia Barnes, are in the Final Four. For the first time this year, both head coaches of the Blacks will be present at the national semi-final.
Our history in women’s basketball is filled with so many black bodies that it’s high time for me to see that happen in 2021, Staley said after her team’s Tuesday no. 6 had defeated Texas.
According to the 2019-2020 Annual Demographic Survey of Athletes and Coaches conducted by the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport at the University of Central Florida, 19.3 percent of head coaches were black or African-American. This is in stark contrast to the 41.9% black or African-American female student-athletes in Division I women’s basketball, according to the report.
Nearly 78 percent of women’s basketball coaches in Division I were white, according to the report.
If you look at the head coaching positions nationally in the Power 5, there is no representation, Barnes said. Two years ago I was the only black coach in the Pac-12, both men’s and women’s. And then Charmin Smith came into the league, and there were two of us – and our sport is predominantly black, she added, referring to UCLA head coach Berkeley.
Both Barnes and Peck said that black coaches who would like to practice often aren’t given the opportunity to develop as assistants, aren’t given enough support for their teams or aren’t given the space to step up when they make a mistake.
The advice from people who cared about me was: Don’t take the job because you won’t have another chance, Barnes said. But white people get opportunities all the time, all the time.
She says she has several mentors in the game, including Staley, who she says corresponds with her regularly. She has been very supportive of me and what I do, Barnes said. It’s like elsewhere in the country, but we want everyone to succeed. I don’t think we have enough.
In the end, Staley Peck won the 1999 championship. Peck said that when Staley played the game back, she said: Now we have to decide who to give the next one to.
