For the third year in a row, the Cleveland Browns and their fans are getting to kick back and relax a little in the preseason. For the first time in the history of the Browns’ preseason at the University of Arkansas, the team will practice at the Razorback Stadium. The Browns practiced on the Hogs’ field at various points of their training camp, but never on their home field.
With training camp just a few weeks away, the madness is in full effect. Teams are already practicing together on the field, while players are getting used to new teammates and new schemes. As teams gear up for their respective seasons, they have started to get creative in their preseason preparations.
With the NFL training camp in full swing, preseason fun is in full swing. One of the most unusual training camp activities involves the New York Giants and Cleveland Browns. While the two teams traditionally have been fierce rivals, both teams are participating in joint practices, which will continue into the preseason. Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns and Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants were seen hanging out together, but their pleasant banter stopped when both teams hit the field for joint workouts on Thursday. Cleveland and New York aren’t the only teams in the NFL’s 2021 training camps facing off this week.
The Tennessee Titans will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New York Jets will face the Green Bay Packers, the San Francisco 49ers will face the Los Angeles Chargers, the Las Vegas Raiders will face the Los Angeles Rams, the Atlanta Falcons will face the Miami Dolphins, and the Baltimore Ravens will face the Carolina Panthers on Thursday.
The violent scuffles in Tampa, the Chargers’ circus receptions, and the Broncos’ battle at wide receiver are among the topics covered by NFL Nation writers.

Carl Lawson of the Jets had a season-ending injury. End for the New York Jets Carl Lawson, the team’s biggest offseason free-agent acquisition, was carried off the field with a torn left Achilles tendon on Thursday. During a joint practice between the Jets and the Packers at the Packers’ facility, the injury occurred during a red zone session. Lawson, who was expected to be the Jets’ main edge-rushing threat, will be out for the 2021 season.
At a heated Titans-Bucs practice, tempers erupt. Despite both Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians and Titans coach Mike Vrabel declaring zero tolerance for fighting before the sessions, tempers rose on Day 2 of joint practices between the Buccaneers and Tennessee in Tampa, culminating in five altercations that had to be broken up. “There are a lot of mature guys who are fighting with their emotions. In a joint session with the Baltimore Ravens, the Carolina Panthers opened training camp with five interceptions, two of which were thrown by rookie defensive lineman Daviyon Nixon. That was encouraging news for a defense that finished the season with seven interceptions and made it a priority throughout the summer to improve in that area. Coach Dan Campbell has ruled out Detroit Lions running back D’Andre Swift and Pro Bowl tight end T.J. Hockenson for Saturday’s preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Swift is still dealing with a persistent groin ailment, but he returned to practice for a part of exercises, as did Hockenson, who has a “small” injury. On Thursday, there were no violent altercations between the 49ers and Chargers, which is an uncommon occurrence during NFL joint practices. But it didn’t stop the squabbles from escalating. Kyle Shanahan, the Niners’ coach, had two intriguing encounters with Chargers linebacker Kyzir White. The first time was after a one-on-one pass-blocking exercise, when White was yelling profanities. When it comes to fourth-year tight end Robert Tonyan, Thursday’s practice served as a reminder of one thing: he never drops a ball. He did, after all, drop one in a game. One. In Week 17 of the 2018 season, it happened (his first year on an NFL roster). Since then, he’s faced 74 balls in regular-season and postseason games and hasn’t dropped a single one. Tonyan snatched a 30-yard touchdown from Aaron Rodgers on a seam pass like he had Velcro in his hands during Thursday’s joint practice against the New York Jets. Most stories at training camp have been overshadowed by the Denver Broncos’ quarterback competition, but as the Broncos finished up their last open session for fans on Thursday, it was once again apparent how intense the fight for the final wide receiver slots would be. Throughout camp, Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler, and Tim Patrick have shared the majority of plays with the starting offense. If the Broncos adhere to their roster history, it leaves Diontae Spencer, Trinity Benson, and Tyrie Cleveland in a position to compete for two slots. In each of the last seven years, the club has retained six wide receivers on the opening-week roster, with no more than six on any Week 1 squad in the last two decades.
Spencer has been the team’s main returner while being a limited player on offense the previous two seasons. Cleveland was an undrafted rookie who made the roster in 2020 and has shown to be valuable as a reserve and on special teams. But Benson, who had two touchdown receptions in the preseason opener, is one of the team’s most improved players. In the first of two joint practices, the Cleveland Browns defeated the New York Giants. With Odell Beckham Jr. still recovering from a knee injury, Browns teammate Jarvis Landry started the day with a sequence of catches, including a one-handed stab across the middle.

Shane Waldron, the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, had to adore one play in particular from Thursday’s practice. Quarterback Russell Wilson faked a right-handed toss, then swiftly threw a left-handed pass to DK Metcalf, who showed off his track speed by outracing multiple defenders to the end zone for a 50-yard score. The new system that Waldron is implementing puts a greater emphasis on shorter, faster passes in order to keep defenders honest and get the ball out of Wilson’s hands. You say dunk and dunk? The NFL is a league of two halves. After a long off-season and a long pre-season, the players are finally enjoying the fruits of their labor – three-day training camps and two-a-days.
