It’s been a few months since Batwoman’s first season ended and the DC Comics-inspired series has undergone major changes during this time. The biggest event came shortly after the end of the first season, when it was announced that Ruby Rose was stepping down from her role as Kate Kane/Batman. Instead of reworking the role or introducing another comic book character, the series decided to focus on a brand new character named Ryan Wilder (Javisia Leslie). Of course, there was also the question of how exactly the show Kate Kane was going to release – and today we got the answer. Spoilers for the Batman Season 2 premiere, what happened to Kate Kane, below! Don’t look unless you want to know!

The episode begins with Ryan sleeping in his van outside Gotham Harbor, suddenly interrupted by a plane crashing in front of her. When Ryan investigates the wreckage, she finds some of the plane’s dying passengers – and a bag of Kate Kane’s Batforth. In the process, Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson) and Mary Hamilton (Nicole Kang) discover that Kate’s plane, returning from National City – where she had gone to question Cara Danvers/Supergirl (Melissa Benoit) about the kryptonite shard in her possession – has been delayed by bad weather. When they put the two together, they realized that Kate was on the plane that crashed and she was nowhere to be found.

News of Kate’s plane crash spread quickly, with a front page article stating that Kate Kane is missing in connection with the plane crash. The characters who were around Kate begin to react to the news in different ways – Jacob Kane (Dougray Scott) tries to use his resources with the crows to find Kate dead or alive, but he realizes she could be dead, especially after something similar happened to Elizabeth Kane/Alice (Rachel Skarsten) years ago. Luke also suspects that Kate did not survive the crash, and blames himself for the chain of events that led her and the Kryptonite to National City. Mary, on the other hand, tries to take a more optimistic perspective, believing that Kate could survive without Batman.

As the episode unfolds, some of the theories about Kate’s fate begin to come true. In particular, Sophie Moore (Meagan Tandy) believes the plane was targeted by Safiya Sohail (Shivani Ghai) because of Kate’s romantic past with Julia Pennyworth (Christina Wolfe). At the end of the episode, Sophie’s theory takes a severe hit when she receives a letter from Kate’s vault stating that she is Batman and that she still loves him.

Meanwhile, Alice is also upset by Kate’s apparent death – because she’s not the person who made it disappear, and she’s not sure who did. In the final scene of the episode, she seems to have her answer, with a sinister note from Safiya announcing that we are now even.

So Kate Kane is dead? The episode doesn’t say anything definitive, especially after Batwoman Caroline Dries confirmed last year that they wouldn’t kill Kate, mainly to avoid getting into the difficult Bury Your Gays trope. Some fans may wonder how Kate survived such a brutal plane crash, but there’s certainly a precedent in comics for superheroes surviving unspeakable events without their superhero costumes. This, of course, raises the question of what exactly his status will be and how the various theories surrounding him will affect Batman’s collateral functions.

What happened to Kate? Is she alive? Is she dead? Is she missing? Is she on the run? Is she a prisoner? It’s lost, Dries told a virtual meeting of the DC FanDome last year. These are all great mysteries that take us deeper into the season, and all of our characters will have different perspectives on them. Different conspiracy theories, different points of view, and this will create a lot of drama, suspense, mystery, intrigue. It will be shocking, amazing and impressive.
