The NFL 2021 quarterfinals could be an age group with up to six first-round quarterfinals, according to ESPN design analysts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay.
It all starts at the top with Trevor Lawrence of Clemson, one of the QB’s best prospects in recent years and favourite for the first total pick. Lawrence will compete in the school soccer play-offs with the other top player of the class, Justin Fields from Ohio State. Not far behind them… So far these are Zach Wilson of the university, Trey Lance of North Dakota State, Mac Jones of Alabama (also in PCP) and Kyle Trask of Florida. NFL teams that need a new design under the center have many possibilities.
But who are these channels and what makes them best in the NFL? We have provided you with everything you need to know about them, including their background, strengths and weaknesses, as well as Kiper and McShay’s reviews. We start with Lawrence, who will probably be the number one in the next selection, and we end with a few more quarterbacks that can be recruited next April.

If you’ve never heard Lawrence’s name, you may have been living under a rock the last few years. He has an NFL-ready frame and arm gun, and McShay called him the best quarterback he’s seen in college since Andrew Luck in 2012. And all Lawrence does is win.
He was the starting quarterback at 52-2 Cartersville High School in Cartersville, Georgia, and Clemson lost only once in three seasons with him as center (the USL defeated Clemson for the national title last season). In his first year as a five-year-old in the 2018 class, he threw 30 touchdown passes for the Tigers and led them to the national title. After a slow start to the 2019 season – he threw five penalty kicks in his first three games – Lawrence ended his winning streak, led Clemson to a 14-1 season and threw 36 touchdown passes. He is the favorite to be the first choice in the 2021 design, although he is not in the design this season. However, he did attend the Senior Day celebration in Clemson.

Trevor Lawrence of Clemson steps into the bag and throws a dart to E.J. Williams, who goes all the way to the end for a 33-yard touchdown.
Off the field, the long, long-haired QB was the face of the We Wild Games movement during the summer, promoting a 2020 university football season amid a coronavirus pandemic. In the end, his wish was granted and Lawrence Clemson led to a 10-1 season. Lawrence’s only defeat came on the sidelines when he tested positive at VIDOC-19 at the end of October, missing 35 days between the start and missing two races. But on his return, he picked up where he left off and threw more than 400 yards in the victory over Pittsburgh.
I have learned a lot about myself and what I want to be, and I have become a better person in the process, Lawrence said earlier this month. But I want it to end well and play for a championship. That was the goal from the beginning.
His next test is coming up: Can Lawrence win another national championship and give an NFL team in distress the benefit of his victories?
2020 Statistics: 2,753 passing yards, 69.2% completion rate, 22 touchdowns and four interceptions in nine games (plus 211 running yards and seven TDs).
Evaluation : Kiper’s QB1 (#1) | McShay’s QB1 (#1)
What’s the next step? Lawrence had a memorable day at the CCA Championship game – a 31-10 victory over Notre Dame – where he threw for 322 yards and for 90 more, scoring three touchdowns. Clemson now leads to his game against Ohio State at the Ohio Sugar Bowl (8:45 p.m. ET, January 1 on ESPN) as one of four teams in the college football play-offs. In case of victory, the national title game will be played on the 11th against Alabama or Notre Dame. The month of January takes place.

If you score 51 touchdowns in your first season as a starter, you attract attention. And Fields was in the spotlight for the Buckeyes in his second year of center-half.
Fields grew up in Georgia and has distinguished itself on the soccer field – a five-star rookie ranked No. 1 in the 2018 ESPN 300 Rankings for Lawrence – and on the baseball field, a center fielder with perhaps a high MLB rating. But Fields decided to play soccer, first by going to Penn State, then by changing his mind and going to Georgia. His last season in high school was shown in the second season of QB1 on Netflix: In the light. He spent a season in Georgia behind Jake Fromm before leaving for Ohio for the 2019 season. He was given the right to act immediately. In his statement, Mr. Fields said that I do not regret my time at UGA and that I have no bad feelings for the school or the football program.
He made an immediate impact in Ohio, becoming the third QB Buckeyes in 50 years to win each of his first 13 starts. He became the first player in the Big Ten, with 40 passing touchdowns and 10 rushdowns in the same season. A Heisman finalist, he led Ohio State to the college football playoffs, but lost 29-23 to Clemson in the semifinal. It’s his only loss in Ohio State.

Ohio State’s Justin Fields breaks off for a 44-yard run on the field, forcing the quarterback to retire from the game.
In August, while other conferences were preparing for the start of the season, Fields submitted a petition asking the Big Ten to resume the 2020 season immediately. The Buckeyes started playing in October, and Fields had only 11 incomplete passes in three games; he had 11 touchdown passes at that time. Now with 6-0, the Buckeyes are ready for a new race to take the title of champion of the 89.5 total QBR of Fields.
The accuracy of the fields on the field and his ability to make games under pressure make him one of the best quarterbacks in the category, although his five rebounds in the two toughest games in Ohio State this season have raised questions. With victories over Lawrence and Clemson next week, Fields may have two more chances to show NFL scouts that he’s in the top group of the selection discussion.
2020 Stats: 15 touchdowns and five interceptions in six games (plus 274 yards and five TDs on disc)

What’s the next step? Ohio State is the No. 3 seed in the college football play-offs and will take over Clemson at Sugar Bowl on New Year’s Day in a showdown between the top two quarterbacks in the draft. A victory in this country would give the Buckeyes a chance to win the national title in 10 days. No date has yet been set for the announcement of the NFL, so the quarterback of the State of Ohio is next.

Wilson received his first scholarship offer in 2015 from Weber state – he was a skinny little noodle, the former assistant said – and joined the Boise state two years later. However, a later offer from BYU gave him something Boyce couldn’t do: He plays prom near his family. Wilson, one of six children, grew up in Draper, Utah, in a family of Utah fans, but the chance to see his family regularly during college forced him to change allegiances. His father, Mike, was a quarterback coach at a private high school and helped him a lot in the air and on the ground at Corner Canyon High School.
Wilson became the youngest player of the Cougars at 19 years and 2 months when he led the QB against Hawaii in 2018 and contributed four touchdowns to the victory. Wilson took BYU to the famous Idaho Potato Bowl this season where he shot an 18 for 18 for 317 yards and four touchdowns in another victory. But his second year brought his averages (11 touchdown passes, 9 peaks) and a six-week absence in the middle of the campaign with a broken thumb.
The 2020 season has been magical for Wilson, who has pushed himself to the top 10. The Cougars were 10-1 in the regular season and Wilson had 43 touchdowns on three interceptions. It was among the top five in the country in terms of passing yards (3,692), yards per attempt (10.8) and completion rate (73.2 percent). He could become the first BYU quarterback to be selected in the first round since Steve Young in 1984. Wilson finished with 425 meters on pass and five touchdowns in the victory of the Cougars over UCF in the Boca Raton Bowl of RoofClaim.com.
2020 Statistics: 3,267 passing yards, 73.2% completion rate, 30 touchdowns and three interceptions (plus 242 passing yards and eight TDs).
Evaluation : Kiper’s QB3 (#14) | McShay’s QB4 (#15)
What’s the next step? With the bowling match behind him, Wilson has a decision to make. Announcing his participation now would speed up the writing process for one of the biggest participants so far this year.

Lance may have only played one game in 2020 (the Bisons, who decided to play the spring season because of pandemic problems, have only scheduled one game in the fall against Central Arkansas), but in 2019 he set the NCAA record for most passes thrown in a season without interception and became the first freshman to win the CSF Walter Payton Award for Best Offensive Player. And to think he was hardly a quarterback.
Lance grew up as a running back until he moved to QB and led the liquidation offensive at Marshall High School in Minnesota. He learned to play this position by working in the family garden with his father, former CFL cornerback Carlton Lance. Most of his Power 5 offers were to play defense or wide receiver, but Lance ended up in North Dakota, after Carson Wentz and Easton Stick under the Bison center.

Trey Lance pretends he has a pass and then challenges Hunter Luepka for a lead of 23 meters, giving the state of North Dakota a lead of 32-28 meters.
In his only full season as a regular player, Lance threw for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns and added 1,100 yards and 14 ground goals. He never lost a game in college and led the Bisons to the 2019 FCS Championship. In his only start in 2020, he finished 15 of 30 for 149 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Again he was very effective with 143 meters and two extra points.
Will the experiment inform the design? Lance has never played against an FBS team during his university career and has only had 17 career doctors. According to ESPN’s statistics and data review, six quarterbacks were accepted in the first round and fewer than 20 lectures have been opened since 2006. This list is a mixture: Mitchell Trubisky (13 years old), Cam Newton (14 years old), Dwayne Haskins Jr. (14), Mark Sanchez (16), Kyler Murray (17) and Ryan Tannehill (19). Lance will be 20 years old when he is drafted and will probably be the first drafted player in the NFL born in 2000.
Evaluation : Kiper’s QB5 (#16) | McShay’s QB3 (#12)
What’s the next step? Lance has already decided to give up the spring season in North Dakota and introduce the design. Since he has only played one game this year, next year’s NFL Combine will be a big event, as well as a potential pro-day for scouts to take a closer look at him.

Jones grew up in Florida, played Pop Warner, worshipped Tim Tebow and was even a children’s model in numerous commercials and advertisements. As a four-star recruiter of the Bolles school, he moved to Alabama in 2017, after having chosen Kentucky. He was reassigned before serving as Tua Tagovailoa’s replacement for two seasons, but replaced Tagovailoa twice as Crimson Tide’s starter in 2019 due to an injury.
Although he drew national attention as the quarterback of Alabama, Jones didn’t enter the 2020 season with much enthusiasm. He didn’t even keep his starting role, because Bryce Young, a five-star freshman, also went to Tuscaloosa. But after piling up the elite numbers on his way to an 11-0 record, he was ranked in the middle of the first lap. Kiper and McShay discussed the status of Jones in November, with Kiper emphasizing Jones’ ability to shed the field. This season, Jones has played four games with over 400 passing yards and six games with at least four touchdowns. He scored both goals on Saturday in a penalty shootout against Florida in the SEC championship game.

It has been a long road for Trask, but his breakthrough in the 2020 season rightly places him in the top group of quarterbacks in this category. First of all, he didn’t even start after his first year on the high school team. Why is that? Eric King, a former cougar from Houston and the current hurricane spotter from Miami, also attended Manvel Texas High School. Then Trask went to Florida and didn’t see much action; he blushed in 2016 and sat on the bench for two seasons behind Phelape Franks, who is also in this class. However, after the injury of Franks in 2019, Trask came up and threw for 2,941 yards, 25 points and seven steals. He kept his job and Franks was transferred to Arkansas.
Trask has taken his game to a new level this season. He set the Florida record for the number of touchdowns thrown in one season (43) and became the first FBS player in 15 seasons (and the only one in SEC history) to throw at least three in nine consecutive games. He’s done it in 10 out of 11 games this season. Trask could be a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

What’s the next step? It will be the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic to close the 8-3 season of the Gators. The meeting with Oklahoma on the 30th. December (8pm, ESPN) will be Trask’s last university competition. But by accepting an invitation to the Senior Bowl, he still has a chance to compete for a first-round pick next April. The Senior Bowl will be held the last week of January in Mobile, Alabama.
The best of the other
These are the other quarterbacks of the class of 2021, and each of them could go through the preliminary design (in alphabetical order):
Ian Book, Irish fighter from Notre Dame: Book has a 30-4 record in his starter career at Notre Dame, throwing 49 touchdown passes with only eight interceptions in the last two seasons. At six feet, Book is underdeveloped, but Kiper ranks him ninth. You can watch his next game against Alabama in the Rose Bowl presented by Capital One on the 1st. January (4 p.m. ET, ESPN). The book will also be on display at the Senior Bowl.
Sam Ehlinger, Texas Longhorns: Ehlinger passed 11,019 yards and scored 126 touchdowns (93 passes, 33 runs) in 42 starts in Texas since 2017. Its double threat capacity can be attractive to an NFL team. Kiper and McShay both rank him as QB #10 in this class. Ehlinger and the Longhorns are playing on the 29th. December (9 p.m., ESPN) at the Valero Alamo Bowl against Colorado. Ehlinger will also be at the Senior Bowl.
Felipe Franks, Arkansas Razorbacks: Franks, a transfer from Florida, broke his ankle during his junior season with the Gators in 2019 and lost his runway to Kyle Trask. In his season in Arkansas alone, he made 68.5% of his passes with 17 touchdowns and four pitches. At six feet tall and weighing 90 kilograms, Franken has NFL-like stature and intriguing skills, and Kiper thinks he’s probably picking a third day. The Razorbacks play TCU in the Mercury Texas Bowl on the 31st. December (8 p.m. ET, ESPN).
Kellen Moon, Texas A&M Aggies: On Monday, the Aggies won 30 games as starting linebackers, with only Corey Pullig (33), who won the most as quarterback in the history of Texas A&M, falling behind. His accuracy was a problem at the beginning of the season, but he made 63.5 percent of his passes and made only three interceptions as a senior. McShay considers him the seventh best QB in this class. A&M’s next event is the Capital Orange Bowl on the 2nd. January (8pm, ESPN) on the program, and he will also be present at the Senior Bowl.
Jamie Newman, Georgia Bulldogs: After 26 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions in Wake Forest, Newman was transferred to Georgia as a graduate in 2019. However, Newman chose not to play for the Bulldogs before the start of the season due to concerns about VIDOC-19. The six-legged Newman is another player entering the Senior Bowl next month.
