A.J. Green was one of the best wide receivers in the NFL during his 10-year career, and he set the tone for his Hall of Fame induction. But with a new starting quarterback and a new coach for the first time in his career, it didn’t work out. Green, who turns 33 in July, was not re-signed this season, and the Bengals picked up Ja’Marr Chase from LSU in April in fifth. Chase replaces a player with 65 touchdowns and nearly 10,000 yards receiving, but the new receiver will give the Bengals something they were missing at the position: versatility. For most of his career, Green was almost always out of the numbers. Chase has the flexibility to be used in a variety of formations, providing a new sense of freedom in an offense that could help the Bengals succeed. Chase’s versatility will increase his processing speed and, according to Boyd, allow Barrow to get on the field and run plays without having to tell receivers their specific assignment at every snap. It helps guys feel more comfortable knowing they can just compete and be there all the time, Boyd said. You can just settle down and go. With Boyd, Chase and T. Higgins (second pick in the round last year, who modeled after Green and led the team in receptions), Cincinnati has a solid trio of receivers.
