Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has made a $4 million contribution to the University of Maryland to fund scholarships for prospective African-American athletes in the state. The announcement was made at the opening of the school’s new sports medicine center, which will bear the name of Ozzie Newsome, Bisciotti’s former General Manager and the father of one of the world’s best tight end, John.

Jeff Zrebiec, Baltimore Ravens beat reporter for the Baltimore Sun, recently reported that Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has created a scholarship fund in honor of former Ravens General Manager and current Executive Vice President Ozzie Newsome. Zrebiec said that Bisciotti will be providing $4 million for the fund, which will provide scholarship money to students from historically black colleges and universities. In 2013, Newsome created a similar scholarship fund for HBCU players, who were drafted by the Ravens.

Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has made a $4 million donation to the University of Maryland’s University College. The gift is to help fund scholarships for students attending Maryland HBCUs.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — Baltimore Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has been looking for a way to honor Ozzie Newsome since he stepped down as the team’s general manager three years ago. Bisciotti came up with an idea that not only affects student life in Baltimore, but also relates to Newsom’s youth. Bisciotti told ESPN that he and his wife will donate $4 million in Newsom’s name to Maryland colleges and universities with historically black populations. The Ozzie Newsome Scholarship Program funds scholarships for Baltimore City Public Schools graduates who attend HBCUs in Maryland. I feel like I’ll be meeting great people all over Baltimore and Maryland over the next 30 years who will be showing up as Ozzie Newsom Scholars, Bisciotti told ESPN. It’s like planting a seed that will bloom. Newsome, a Hall of Fame tight end and the architect of two championship teams for the Ravens, has always avoided the spotlight. In fact, Bisciotti knew that Newsome would refuse to be included in the Ravens’ honor roll until he completely withdrew from the organization. Newsome is currently the Executive Vice President. Over the next 30 years, I will have the wonderful feeling of meeting extraordinary people all over Baltimore and Maryland who introduce themselves as Ozzie Newsom Fellows. It’s like planting a seed that will bloom. Steve Bisciotti. But even Newsome admitted he couldn’t turn down the honor, which holds special meaning for him. All Newsom High School teachers and principals, grades 1-5, attended HBK universities. Both of his daughters graduated from HBCUs and his brother played at Alabama A&M. Newsom was extremely humble when Bisciotti informed him of the scholarship program on his behalf. To this day, I have no words to describe how I felt when he told me that, Newsome told ESPN. That’s the kind of grace that [Bisciotti] and [his wife] Renee do. To this day, I am passionate about this project because it has a huge impact on these students and the Baltimore community. Bisciotti was inspired to create the scholarship program when four HBCUs in the state of Maryland entered into a $577 million agreement with the state, ending a 15-year legal battle over underfunding. Ozzie Newsom, the architect of the Ravens’ two Super Bowl championship teams, says he is grateful to owner Steve Bisciotti and his wife for this initiative that will have an impact on these students and the Baltimore community. Aaron Doster/USA TODAY Sports The Stephen and Renee Bisciotti Foundation will donate $1 million to each of Maryland’s four universities: Bowie State University, Coppin State University, Morgan State University and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Each spring, each of the four HBCUs selects five city high school graduates to serve as Ozzie Newsom Scholars for the upcoming freshman class. Beginning with the 2022-23 academic year, 20 new first-year fellows will be selected each year for a four-year term, for a total of 80 Ozzie Newsom Fellows over the life of the program. Throughout his life, Ozzy has inspired and uplifted everyone around him with his leadership, humility and determination, Bisciotti said. We hope Ozzie’s example will inspire each of the Newsom Fellows. This is the Ravens’ latest investment in schools and students in Baltimore. The team has helped repair schools, donate school uniforms, distribute bookcarts and provide countless millions of dollars in food. Under the Ozzie Newsome Scholars program, students receive an annual grant of $10,000 for five academic years, for a total of $50,000 per scholar. The Bisciotti Foundation will donate another $400,000 to the CollegeBound Foundation to fund the Newsom Scholar’s participation in the College Completion Program, bringing the Bisciotti Foundation’s total gift to $4.4 million. Steve and Renee Bisciotti recognize the transformative impact of Maryland’s historically black colleges and universities and generously pave the way for Baltimore City Public Schools graduates to experience that legacy, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said. Newsome, the NFL’s first African-American general manager, was known as one of the league’s top decision-makers when he led the Ravens’ personnel department from the team’s inaugural season in 1996 until the end of the 2018 season. He drafted 25 Pro Bowl players and three Hall of Fame inductees, causing an uproar among In Ozzie we trust fans. Bisciotti called Newsom a torchbearer for our stability and continuity and believes this scholarship program will not be the last time he can reward him. Sooner or later, he’ll be in our Ring of Honor – when he’s playing golf five days a week instead of three, Bisciotti said. This [scholarship program] is a new chapter in Ozzy’s world. Ozzie says that whatever those tasks are, he will do them.Steve Bisciotti, the owner of the Baltimore Ravens, has paid tribute to a former team executive with a $4 million gift in honor of his commitment to the education of black students. Bisciotti and his wife Darcie are major supporters of the O’Neal Newsome Family Scholarship Fund at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The fund supports the education of students from Baltimore and other cities in Maryland, and current and former staff and student leaders from the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Redskins..
