Editor’s comments : The Miami Dolphins will receive the New England Patriots at 1:00 p.m. Sunday. ET (CBS) in week 15 of the 2020 NFL season, looking back on the week 9 team game. December 2018: The dolphins win 34-33 at home.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – In a rivalry that has bridged 104 regular season games, there has never been a moment like Sunday between the Miami Dolphins and the New England Patriots. The Wildcat explosion ten years ago was a shocking result, but this year’s surprise victory came in just 17 seconds on a 69-yard race with two full-backs, a couple of back blocks and a strange personal decision from the Patriots. According to ESPN’s probability measurement of victory, the dolphins had a 99,9 % to 100 % chance of winning.
I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. It was crazy, said Dolphins’ receiver Danny Amendola.

The dolphins are on their own 31-yard line and are five points behind with seven seconds to go. They had that fleeting opportunity thanks to their defense, which kept the Patriots off the field after their first attempt in the previous training. Dolphins’ coach Adam Gase called Boise – a game with a catch similar to the one Boise State had in 2007 when it defeated Oklahoma at the Fiesta Bowl.
The game required the quarterback of Dolphins Ryan Tannehill to throw a 15-20 yard pass to receiver Kenny Stills, who made an inside loop. Then he threw it at DeVante Parker for the reception. Parker then finds the Kenyan who left Drake on the play with a lateral. Then they just hoped that Drake or another player behind him would find a hole on the pitch and maybe pull a few lanes.
ESPN spoke with several dolphins and patriots to discuss what happened:

No Ave Maria
The Patriots played a soft, oversteered defense. Strangely enough, their last line of defense was that of Rob Gronkowski, who has been playing with injuries for weeks. After the race, Tannehill and Gase said a Hail Mary wasn’t considered because they couldn’t enter the end zone, which was 69 meters away.
Drake received the ball after two side passes from Stills and Parker and walked 52 metres on the sideline.
Drake: That was the last part of the piece that was in the script when I got the field. I’m the trailer behind the room. It was sand football. I was looking for someone to deliver it and made sure I threw it away for a page. There was no one around, so I didn’t have to make anything out of anything.
The patriots are training Bill Belichick: Yeah, but they can throw it lower. They were able to make a desperate game, which is a kind of 20-yard pass, and then it became a desperate game [with multiple side passes].
Defensive patriots terminate Duron Harmon: We knew the situation would be sideways. The ball was on the [31] yard line; we didn’t think it was a Hail Mary, everyone comes back.

Division, Division, Division
The Dolphins train every week in Boise, including last Friday. They usually play it against the defense of their scout team without offensive players, which doesn’t give the impression of a real game until it happens.
Several key blocks allowed Drake to score a touchdown, but it was the Dolphins who guarded Ted Larsen’s block and the Patriots who protected Patrick Chung at the 30-yard line who made the biggest difference.
Tannehill: I’ve been following in my footsteps, so to speak. The game’s a little coded. I saw Kenny in there. So am I: Drop it! Come on! Come on! He throws, KD [Drake] goes back – I kind of have a good overview – goes back, and then I see him with Gronck about 10 yards away, and I say: Gronckle on the field! We did it! It was amazing.
Still images : Honestly, I have to catch the ball and throw it a little faster.
Parker: When I caught him, I was just trying to get some extra meters. I got what I could get and gave it back to KD.
The gas: At one point I got really angry with DeVante because I thought he had a chance to turn around and walk away, but he made the right decision.
Harmon: I thought we had some solid holes, but things got a bit confused at the end and they could touch the fold.
Feedback: All I had to do was run onto the field and take cover and let the players play. Don’t go to ground with the ball, that’s the motto. I wanted to block so they wouldn’t throw the ball at me.
Patriots CB Jonathan Jones: That was fast.

I have to go somewhere..
The game lasted 17 seconds, but the last few seconds are the ones that people will remember the most. Drake had only Gronkowski to beat, and the Patriots’ overmatched end stumbled to the ground when Drake came down the sideline and entered the end zone.
Drake: When I passed the corner and the linebacker, it was just me and Gronckle. I couldn’t let Gronckle treat me like this. I’m sorry, Gronckle. You’re a great gambler, but I have to be somewhere.
Gronkowski: I tripped a little, but it’s football.
Tannehill: Drake has a 4.3 and Gronck has a 4.6 or 4.7, so I have a good feeling about this fight.
Gronkowski: I just saw the ball go sideways, hook and ladder and everything. I didn’t think it would hit me, and then I saw a guy hanging out in the field. I mean, that would be… You saw what happened from there.
Frank Gore: I saw m—– going into a corner, I knew he was missing.

Euphoria and disbelief
After the game there was euphoria in the dressing room of the dolphins. The Miami players sang Ted, Ted, Ted to Larsen. Drake’s inundated with interviews. The patriots were infidels. How could this happen?
Several dolphins remembered the five minutes after the game as one of the best experiences they had on the soccer field.
Drake: I didn’t know if there was a flag on that coin. Did I just do that? Is there any time left? There was a lot going on in my head. I threw the ball in the stands, so I know I’m gonna get a ticket from the NFL, but I’m gonna take it on my head.
Patriots WR Josh Gordon: It’s that hard. I’ve never seen such a ringtone, or the way the game ends, in my career. Maybe in college, but this is a crazy game. It’s a crazy game.
DT Akeem Spence Dolphins: I saw him on the sidelines and I said I have to run the field, it’s the only thing I can do. I walked up to the first person I met and hugged her: It was Adam Gase.
Still images : This will remain in the history books of the rivalry between the patriots and the dolphins. It’s a great feeling.
